I found a thread here with more info: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1569134

I’ve read that bumper removal is a lot of work. Any possibility of installing without full removal?

I also just saw that the OEM harness and controller are available as parts (at last!) and have sent the part info to Steve @ Stealth hitches. Hopefully he'll work the OEM harness option in real soon so that I can order a full rack and tow kit.
Did you get any response from Stealth hitch? I just received my hitch and noticed that the standard harness won't get this integrated with the idrive system. How did you make out?

No I didn't, but will prod again.
I don't think there'll be an answer until Stealth have the "active" harness option.

Anyone using the OEM BMW harness and controller with the Stealth tow hitch?
I am thinking this is the best route (not the cheapest).

No one has really answered this question. Some have asked Steve @ Stealth, but for some reason no clear answer. I think the issue
was availability of the harness. I see absolutely no reason why you couldn’t use the OE BMW. This is what I plan to do. If need be, all you may need is maybe an adapter bracket to fit the connector to the hitch. No big deal. The OE BMW swan neck hitch is ok, but I also need the square receiver option for my bike rack and I don’t see any BMW factory or retrofit solution. Have you called Stealth and talked to them?

Stealth told me that the active harness is not available at all yet, and they don’t know when it will be. It looks like you may need the BMW oem harness and a module. There is a plug inside the side compartment of the cargo area that has been identified as the spot that the oem module and/or harness would plug into. Somewhere around here there’s another thread about that.

Given all the hassle, and that I was looking for lightly used cars, I passed on the ones I found without the tow package and bought one with it. BMW is really not making it easy to add a hitch if you don’t buy it from the factory that way.

I did get an update from Stealth that they hope to have the parts in hand at some point in September and have an available product some time in October.

Seems that getting the parts is what's taking so long, so if anyone is able to lay their paws on the harness and controller so email Stealth to see if they want them a little early. I've not had any success sourcing the parts independently. Places show them for sale but after a call I find out that they're available to "ship from BMW" rather than in-stock.

I also have a Stealth Hitch sitting in my garage and I'm waiting to install until I can do an active integration.

The control module is available but the wiring harness is not. BMW keeps pushing out the availability date. Someone on here claimed that they got the harness from BMW of San Antonio - I have emails out to them, BMW Monterey, and GetBMWParts.com. I'll let you know if I find someone with inventory.

Why not just build your own harness? If you can get a wiring diagram the connectors should not be hard to source. And wire is cheap...

I just placed an order with ECS Tuning. Their website says both harness and controller are in stock. We'll see.

Link? I don't see a G05 Trailer Hitch Wiring Harness on their site. I only see wiring harnesses for other generations of X5.

I can confirm the wiring harness is NOT available from ECS.

Emailed BMW Canada and they say it will be available in Q4 2020.

The hunt continues...

I had my hitch installed. I am impressed. Very solid. The fitment is perfect. I didn't install the wiring provided as I plan to use the OEM controller and the harness, when available.
I highly recommend this hitch.

Who installed this for you? Any pics of the install? I am in Hamilton and most likely get one when I take delivery of X5MC. If you had no wiring installed I assume you wont be towing any trailer with lights?

Would like to know myself. On their website, it lists safe pull trailer as the installer so curious if you went with them.

I would like to get the hitch but I’ll rather wait till Steve has the bmw harness too. BMW Newmarket said the bmw harness retrofit ($585) is back ordered and I could get late August but then Steve told I would also need the control module. I went back to bmw Newmarket and they said the control module had other parts I would need like a battery lead or something so I’m taking a backseat and waiting till stealth hitches have the complete kit.

This is my first time getting a hitch on a bmw so I’ll play it safe.

I had a local mechanic/body shop do the install. Took them 3 hours. The instructions were very good. I am waiting for the OEM wiring to become available. I have the controller already.
There is an excellent video of an X7 getting this hitch installed on YouTube. It's very straight forward after the bumper comes off.

So let's be clear. The pic that James posted is NOT the "Stealth Hitch" it is the BMW OE hitch/factory- euro style available in Europe and Australia not North America. The Stealth Hitch is made in the U.S.A. by Stealth Hitch. This is confusing people...the Stealth Hitch we are referring to in this post is the actual Stealth Hitch brand, not the BMW OE gooseneck/euro style. Go to the Stealth hitch website and look at the pictures there.
