Active grill shutter

Has anyone actually seen the active grill shutter open? I have driven the car hard, but right when I get out it's already closed. I'm starting to doubt that it actually opens.
I suppose I could drive in front of my wife and see if it's open while driving, but have not gotten around to this yet.

You could always stick a GoPro on it and take a road trip.

Yes. I took a video of mine closing when turning the car off. Too bad I can't post the video to this thread.

I uploaded the video to YouTube showing the shutters closing after I had someone turn off the engine.

Haha - I left my car running when I got to my garage and after getting out to move something out of the way, I saw the shutter was open. Like a dumbass, I stuck my fingers in and it (of course) started to close. Scared the crap out of me.

I have a 50i and it's always open when I stop even when it was 25° outside. My X3 would almost never have the grill open unless I was riding around in Sport +

I’ll be blunt, this is one of those typical over-engineered, over thought-out items that really don’t add much value, but what will cost an enormous amount of money to replace when it fails. And, mechanical parts like these—exposed to the elements and extreme heat from the engine bay—will almost always break soon and break often.

Even more troublesome, a failure of this item where it is stuck close could cause catastrophic overheating if it happens to fail during a long road trip, for example. Is there a manual way to force open the shutters? Will a failure throw a check engine light?

A lot of people—faced with the prospect of replacing these—will likely opt for the X5M grill, that is just wide open instead of spending what is probably a lot more money for the same gimmicky grill. I would.

I removed mine. Looks so much better. Less plastic and the whole thing always looked cheap to me. I could care less about the 1mpg you gain by having them.

Nice, what grill did you put in its place? No codes were thrown when you disconnected it?

You can push them open slowly, and they do throw a check engine when failed according to some other forum posts.

nope no codes. the motor stays in tack and thinks it's still opening and closing the shutters. I tried pulling the fuse when shutters were open and it threw a code at next startup so this is why I removed the shutters. I installed the m grille

I only travel 3 miles home from work and when I stop the grill is open and the fan is on. After a couple minutes the fan stops and the grill closes. My guess is it stays shut the whole way home and opens when I turn the car off

sorry to bring up an old thread but do you guys know of a way to open the shutters when the car is off? I'd like to get them open so i can rinse bugs off of the radiator while I wash the car but I dont want to manually force them open and risk breaking anything lol.

Before I wash it, I take the car for a ride and leave it running with the shutters open and rinse the bugs from the radiator. Then I shut it down to get the outside of them with the rest of the car.

If there's a manual way to open them, I'd like to know too.

Do you have pics with the M grill before removing the active shutters? How easy was it to remove the active shutters?

You can hear the grill open and close. The car makes like an organ instrument noise as its opening/closing. It almost sounds like its from the speakers, but its the noise from the actuator I believe. Its very evident when parked and you turn the engine off. Almost sounds like exit music lol.
