Ordered my 2020 x5 xDrive 40i .... My NIGHTMARE ordering experience

What a nightmare experience this has been.

I had a deal for a 2020 x5 m50 on March 14th. I signed papers and everything. However due to covid the dealership that had the car was unwilling to do the swap with my local dealership. The deal then got cancelled 5 days later.

I then tried to custom order an M50 but BMW was not taking any orders for those due to a shortage according to my local dealership.

My local dealership then put in a custom order on an M sport 40i .... had papers signed and everything...they then gave me a production number on a Thursday. I was able to track the car with the production number. However on Friday the car disappeared from my garage and I could no longer track the number as it said invalid production number. I called my salesman and he had no idea that the car was gone. He contacted me 48 hours later and told me something went wrong and apparently BMW cancelled the order because they were not taking any more 2020 orders. This was around May 13th ....PS this is complete BS because as you will see BMW was still DEFINITELY taking 2020 orders.

He said he placed another order so I then asked him the production number and he had no idea what it was. He said he would call me back within 24 hours and he never did. After I get my car I will leave these guys a really "nice" review.

I doubted the salesman so I went to a dealership 30 minutes away from my local one and the guy was amazing. He was able to place my order and so far everything is good

May 20th : Order placed
June 4th : Scheduled for production

Now I'm just waiting ... I called BMW and they said they expect it to be delivered by the 28th week which should be between July 6 - July 12. I do believe I may get it earlier than that as I think this is just a general target for delivery.

Would you mind sharing your deal numbers or maybe just MSRP discounts? Did you have to renegotiate each time?

This wasn't a lease for me and I will keep it for some time so I did not want to deal with the unknown and problems the V8 may give me as its a new model and we don't know what can go wrong with it.

If I was going to lease I would have def taken the m50

Also it just didn't work out for me I kept having deals cancelled and orders cancelled and I couldn't wait anymore haha

I can relate because i placed an order for an M50 almost exactly the same time at open road bmw. My order kept getting delayed and eventually got pushed to June 22nd build date. My sales guy was telling me that alot of orders just got canelled out of the blue by BMW because they couldn't schedule all of the 2020 builds with the factories being closed for a month. That part is true.

There are alot more 40i build allocations than there are M50i which is probably why you could easily get one at another dealer but not for a M50i.

One thing i also noticed is that the discounts aren't nearly where they were pre covid. My buddy has only gotten up to 6% off msrp recently when pre covid they were going for 10-11% off.

EVERY SINGLE THING you just stated is what I experienced haha. Yes Pre covid deals were insane. I had multiple M50 deals that were giving me around 14.77% Discount off MSRP including the incentives. I just wish the factory actually made the order happen *sigh*. The M50 I had cancelled due to the other dealer not wanting to do a dealer swap due to covid getting worse was at that price point. After covid peak... (1 month later) I could only get 6% off MSRP and then incentives. I came to around 10.43% off MSRP

Next time just deal with a broker, its much easier and prob get a better deal also.
I am a broker myself so I know a bit more about how the backend works etc, the fact that open road (im assuming Edison) had a hard time getting allocation is BS.
When I ordered my M50i with them, they had NO allocation (2nd month it went into production), all it took was a phone call and they got one from their other store and I had it all sorted out within 4-5 hrs and had production number the next day.

In regards to discounts, I ended up getting around 11.5% off sticker and a few free accessories, I was just quoted invoice for any "M" models and only about 7% off sticker for any other models.
It is mostly due to them not getting a lot of cars coming in and they are trying to stay away from swapping.
