I lost and found my key fob yesterday, any tips on preventing this?

My keychain is unwieldy. It has a 4 key fobs and its heavy and bulky and if I'm just going out by myself, I tend to just unclip the key fob from the key itself and take the remote with me in my pocket. Well yesterday in my drunken stupor I didn't return it to its proper location when I got home and spent all morning panicky looking for it.

I found it but I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas to keep up with the fob when its not attached to the key itself?

Marie Kondo your key situation..

Put all of your required keys on one ring, then put all of the fobs on something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Sunmns-Carabi.../dp/B077695Q9D

Now all you have to do is latch the appropriate fob to your minimal-required-key set.

I have my fob and 1 key, that's it. Supplemental keys are bundled together and remain behind because checking the mail or opening other things are never so urgent I need to clutter up my pockets.

this is perfect, thank you. I was also thinking about getting a few of those "tiles" that have a BT tracker in case I misplace it somehwere in the house again.

Wife uses a TILE... keeps one in her purse and one on the keychain. Can also activate it via the app on the phone, so as long as you don't lose your keys and phone, you'll be OK.

Leave your keys at home and just use the card key when you go out.

If you throw your fob into a crocodile-filled swamp you’ll likely never find it again. Problem solved.

...or did I misinterpret the issue?

My recommendation is to separate your fobs as much as possible to make light keychain units. Then find a place to always, always keep them and make a routine. For example, I have a bowl in my closet. All keys go there as soon as I get home. When I’m out, I only take the car key and house key. Problem solved for me.

I was doing just that! The card key worked great from inside my wallet. Even though it required pressuring my wallet against the door handle and in the tray I was fine with it since it had all the other things I needed when going out.

But then one day inexplicably the card stopped turning on the engine from being inside my wallet and being placed on the charging tray. I added no new cards or bulk to my wallet I honestly don't know what happened. So now, if I have to keep taking the card out of my wallet I thought it better just to take the remote fob with me and leave it in my pocket and enjoy the benefits of the proximity sensor.

So yeah I considered your solution and it worked great till it didn't.

I usually have all my keys in a pocket in my backpack and I'm always good about putting the fob back in my pack pack whenever I get home so I know where it is at all times

Except last night I was so drunk I left my backpack in the trunk and just passed out with the fob in my pants. I later discovered the fob in the hamper. I'm glad I found it and I did implicitly follow your recommendation before all this. But when you're not of sound mind this can happen I guess I'll just have to learn to be even more mindful in the future. Unless bmw extends Carkey to all of the rest of us...

So it sounds like you already have a good system to not lose your fob. The solution to this specific problem is Uber.

How did you manage to drive home - if you were that drunk to pass out once home?

Assuming you were the one that was driving of course! Hope someone else did the driving!

yeah, i've really gotten used to having the proximity sensor to auto lock and unlock the vehicle every day. I wish it worked with the key card that way I'd only ever have to take my wallet anywhere but you cant have everything

I carry only one key with my front wallet and converted all other locks to electronic with geofencing.
