Driver Side Mirror Closing

I just noticed that the driver side mirror stays out further than the passenger side. The passenger side collapses in fully whereas my driver side does not. Is that what everyone else is seeing?

I think mine are equal. I believe there is a way to reset their closed position if they get knocked out by a accident. Have you manually tried to push the drivers mirror all the way in to see if it has full range of motion and not restricted by anything internally? All my German cars mirrors could be manually pushed in even if they were also automatic.

I tried it manually too and the drivers side does not fold in completely like the passenger side. I double checked my other car and both mirrors fold perpendicular to the same extent. Sounds like an issue.

In just about all of my previous BMWs, although the mirrors looked like they were identical, the left and right were all angled slightly different from each other so they wouldn't close in complete sync with each other.

There are numerous threads in the 3/4/5 series forums where people actually measured the differences and angles open and closed

I haven't noticed in my G05 because it's not really on my list of things to worry about, but now I am a little curious.

I just checked mine, and it is the same as yours either manually or powered. I'm not pulling out my measuring tools though because Mirrors not folding at the same angles are non issues to me

mine are the same...not equally close to the body. But I am not sure it's the driver one or the passenger. But I definitely recall one not being as close to the body as the other one.

I measured mine this morning, outer edge of mirror to window glass:

Driver, 5"
Passenger 3"

This is a left hand drive car of course. Are right hand drive models the opposite?

Bringing this up again - just notice my driver side fold does not align with passenger side - is this something that need fixing/corrected or attention? Or nothing to worry? Thanks

If you're new to BMW, side mirrors do not fold equidistant on late model BMWs. Not an issue, just think of it as a "standard feature"

Folding Mirrors don't fold back equally

Is there anybody who knows what theory behind this is?
Really wondering why this is done.

Maybe so that people keep more space on the driver side ??

As mentioned early on in this thread...this question has been asked across multiple BMW forums for decades.

The reason they are different is because the mirror housings are angled differently from the mounting position on the side of the car to maximize the viewable area for the driver.

The LHD/RHD topic was also brought up...and if you were to pull up the part Nbr’s for left hand drive vs right hand drive...the mirrors have different part nbrs based on what side the driver sits on. Thus, if you have a LHD BMW...you can’t just swap on RHD mirrors (and vice versa)...if you do, they won’t be angled correctly for the driver. The mirrors are “side” specific.

In this case...there’s no reason to “fix” what’s not broken.

Hi Folks,

I have the same problem with my RHD G05 here in Australia.

I understand the REASON why this happens, but I still think it's dumb for the following reasons:
  1. My 2006 E60 has folding mirrors and they fold in equally.
  2. The driver's door is used more frequently than the passengers side. Drivers walk past that side mirror more frequently than the passenger's side. So, if anything, it should fold up closer than the passenger side.
  3. We can put a rover vehicle on Mars and control it from Earth. Surely we can make a side mirror that folds up properly!

Totally normal. I posted a thread with the same question when I purchased mine in March. I even tested the X5’s on showroom floor at my dealer including a loaner. Everyone of them measured the same.

Yes, it's normal to the G05, also check a G01 and it's the same. I suppose they could fold more the drives mirror by design, but didn't care about symmetry.
Still you should check for others defects. Mine came with the drivers side of the grill loose and vibrating, had to take to the dealer to be tighten up. Also notice that the gas cap was not leveled to the rest of the body of the car, checked other bimmers and they all are a little up to the line but no tilt, they also level it more normal, but tell me that the others G5 are the same and would tell the fabric about that, not sure they would.
Have still to check an structural driver's seat seam that looks bad and most probably would need replacement of the cover. Also the seam of the steering wheel are a little pointy and that's rare but have not hight hopes about that. There are some quality issues.
But I'm more worried of voice recognition system failures and some fails of the dsc by overreacting at normal curves with almost 100% power loose. Still checking what's happening about that,.

Glad to have this forum as a reference, appreciate this information...I took delivery of my 2022 X5 yesterday and just noticed this...I thought something may be wrong with the driver's side mirror.
