This prevents surprises that many marriages face, such as "what did you spend x on!!!" - oh, it was a handbag. No issue here, because that handbag didn't come out of the joint acct, it came from the personal acct. It also prevents having to have a discussion on every little item.

We have been happily married for nearly a decade and have never had a money fight - so it is working for us.
Great idea. My spouse and I are both in this game the second time around so we do it a bit differently. She has hers, I have mine, and we both contribute to a joint account for shared expenses. Works out fine. There are zero issues regarding finances.

We've been doing the same for over 30 years and in all that time I don't think we've had a single argument about money (which tends to be if not the largest, one of the largest causes of divorce).

Maybe this is too common but a VW GTI in red is a nice car with either a manual or DCT auto. They are a blast to drive, have great utility and you can buy a new one with warranty for that price.

This is how my ex-wife and I did it as well.

We didn't get divorced because of money, but because she took a job traveling every week and apparently was passing it out like it was candy to anyone in whatever hotel bar she was in for the week.

We have always pooled money but I am by far the more careful with it and plan for the future, the mrs is a real spender so we do clash. Doesn't help that she makes more than me so i suspect feels entitled to more but at some point there needs to be some semblance of fiscal management.

I didn't read the whole thread, but I thought I would bring up that there are significant issues with the ND Miata manual transmission. I think they are on the 5th version and still having issues. One of the things that pushed me to the 124 Spider is that it uses the proven NC transmission. That and the fire sale price. Worth checking out a new Abarth before they are all gone. Discounts of $10k or more are attainable and it would definitely stand out.

Also worth having the Abarth if you live at altitude. My mom lives at 7k feet and I forbid her to buy a n/a car.

Just wanted to bump this thread with an update.

Right now - the Jag F-Type is leading the charge with one exception. She absolutely loves the BMW i8 and the Audi R8 - neither of which are available in our price point.

So now we play the waiting game to see if she is willing to dole out the extra cash above the budget.

You two must have automotive ADD. Get a Ford Raptor.

Interesting conversation on the i8. Post #6 from an owner's perspective.

I love the Guilia but it's an Alfa so there's going to be some issues. I never had any trouble with mine but I don't keep my car that long.

Man I love that car. Yes - fully aware of Alfa quirks. I own a 4C (pics below) and have owned several spiders in the past. Problem is that I am on the hunt for a good deal on a Giulia Quad, so would prefer not to have 3 Alfa's in the garage, lol.

Yours is nothing short of stunning.

If she is considering increasing the budget, that could open the door to other options like an Audi TT-RS, or possibly a 2020 Supra once they are discounted after the 2021 models hit the lots.

Is the Jaguar fun enough to drive over the 440ci? I didn’t find it particularly fun - even the SVR. Too numb, imprecise steering, damping too much on the soft side...actually has the same problems that i find in a 4-series. But it looks sexy and makes a great noise, so maybe that’s enough of a change for you.

The i8 is something i don’t think I’ll ever get. It’s not high performance, isn’t visceral, isn’t a supercar, is cramped and impractical, doesn’t make a nice sound or make you feel good when driving it hard. Maybe if you like the looks, but i think it looks terrible. The best i can come up with is that BMW made a concept car in the 2000’s to show its future direction/tech....and then decided to put it into production. Fair enough, but the entire package isn’t compelling to me at all.

If you’re going over the budget, I would just go Cayman, since that seems to be tailor made for most of your requirements.

But the best outcome for you is to have her get the car you were originally going to get (the Alfa QF) and then get another grail car - you get two cars you want instead of one! I assume she lets you drive her cars...?

So couple of responses:

1. The decision is about 50/50 looks and performance
2. She enjoys cars that have decent handling and acceleration
3. She is not super into cars like we are
4. I rarely drive her car, maybe 3-4 times a year
