Acoustic glass worth it at $600?

All the posts I've read said it's a no brainer at $150 but it appears the price has gone up since then and is now $600. I'm coming from an F15 without acoustic, how significant of an upgrade would this be and is it worth the upcharge? This is in the US market.

G05 has better standard sound dampening compared to the F15. Overall consensus of owners with 3KA Acoustic Glass recommend it, but don't expect vault-like silence and it does reduce more road noise than without. Personally I've driven G05s optioned with acoustic glass and I recommend it.

It was definitely a no brainer when it was $150 at launch, then $300 but still worth it at $600. It's value is dependent on how much you value noise reduction. If you're spend a lot of time on the road, then it's worth the up charge.

Unfortunately for MY21 G05 40i and M50i, 3KA Acoustic Glass option is no longer available in addition to other options.

Here's earlier thread discussing 3KA

Thanks, seems like even at the increased cost it's worth it. Would there be any issues tinting the front windows if acoustic? Not sure what the coating or differences are vs. standard.

I tinted all of the windows and moon roof with ceramic, there was no issue with installation.

We ordered it for two reasons:

1. Ordered the Bowers and Wilkins audio system and we wanted more sound isolation

2. We took delivery in Germany, where we are stationed, and wanted the X5 to be quiet at 100+ MPH speeds.

It has delivered benefits in both of those areas, so we have no regrets.

Definitely worth it. Just took delivery of our 2020 M50i with the acoustic glass. Its like a bank vault inside with the windows up.

Honestly, my F15 was more quiet then the G05 I have now. I'm wandering if it has to do with the Conti 22s. but hands down, highway driving is def. louder.

It's been a complaint with some owners with 22" on certain types of roads and few that don't have the counterweights on the front wishbones.

Yes, I've seen it and keeping tabs. I concur the drone type sound only when driving on highway at 70mph+. Listening to music usually drowns it out for me but when I'm with my family, even they noticed this X5 is louder then our previous model.

I don't have a basis of comparison, because I got the acoustic glass, and I've never driven one without it.

However.... I wish the cabin was even quieter than it is.... so without it, I'd have to assume it would be even louder.

With that, yes... I absolutely recommend it.

It makes a difference. Passengers comment on how quiet the ride is in my X5. I also owned a G05 without the acoustic option and while it was not loud no one ever commented on how quiet it was.

Question: my understanding is the acoustic glass isn't available on 21s. Am I wrong? FWIW - looking to purchase an X5M. Thanks.

That's correct for MY21. Option code 3KA Acoustic Glass - is only available and standard on X7s and ALPINA XB7.

I don’t have acoustic glass in my car, so I can’t draw any comparisons, but I can say that my X5 without acoustic glass is quieter than my S7 with acoustic glass. However, if given the choice, I would get it, but I purchased off the lot.

Edit: yeah it’s not even available anymore, which is strange.

Temporary supply issues maybe? Hopefully it makes a comeback later on or at least on subsequent models.

Yes, that is the prevailing theory. When I spoke to my sales manager a few weeks ago he said the options currently missing should hopefully show up later in the model year once the supply chain catches up.

The problem is everyone tries to expect that a thicker glass will reduce all types of noises. That is where the expectation is incorrect.

Imagine driving on a non-tar road like cement concrete. The noise your tires make as they go over the concrete like that pulse noise (thak..thak..thak..) - the acoustic glass is not going to reduce that since it is coming from your car underbelly.

Now imagine harley biker group overtakes you on both sides. You are definitely going to see a difference with your acoustic glass. So honks, nearby vehicle noise etc definitely is less pronounced. Noise generated by your tires - no.

Yes, what you said is mostly correct BUT "noise" is actually an accumulation of everything so having acoustic glass will help reduce certain noises significantly hence an overall quieter cabin space. Besides that, the glasses are actually the only single layer surface that isolate you from outside. Everywhere else, noise has to penetrate through multiple layers of material before getting inside the cabin so the reduction in noise level is very significant with acoustic glass.
