Gear indicator
Am i missing a setting that will show me which gear the car is in, I had one on my last motor which I found useful. And whilst I'm here, why is the fuel computer so awkward to bring up

Do you see something here when you switch over to M/S? Perhaps I misunderstood.

Not every dash layout under every drive mode with every selected right side display shows the current gear. The M dash layouts and Sport displays seem to be reaching infamous status in assuming "performance" driver don't care about the gear. Try other layouts and/or other driving modes, it's the simplest way to learn what does and what doesn't show. Incidentally, the poster above me shows the Alpina dash (coded), which I assert is the best dash for G05 X5 for this and many other reasons.
The answer to the other question/complain is similar. That is ... BMW, "pedantic" common pattern of German UI mentality, general and highly common UX design incompetence ...

Really annoys me on my M50i that the M
HUD doesn’t show the gear like it did in my M4. Not really an issue when in auto but when manual shifting it’s a PITA having to look down at the dash. The new HUD is superb but for the M setting not really adding anything of value. |

In manual mode you need to have an idea what gear you are in so that you know what you are going to shift to for whatever the required situation is. If the box is on full auto it's going to decide for you whether you can see the gear number or not, so does it really make that much difference? I can't imagine you would be that bothered if it was in 5th instead of 6th, or 6th instead of 7th, the shift is so smooth anyway...

While on the subject of missing usual dash info - there's no way to always show the current mileage odometer reading, is there? |

Funny because I've driven manual transmissions most of my life and only switched to automatics when BMW stopped offering them on the 5-series. Never, did I ever think about what specific gear I was in much less while driving an automatic. My gear selection was always dependent on feedback from the engine and driving conditions. Sure, subconsciously I knew but I didn't need an indicator to tell me I was in the wrong gear.
That said, flip the shifter to manual and tap a paddle and the dash will give you an indicator of the gear. |

Guys as we have moved a little sideways, gear indication to mileage, I will throw another niggle into the mix. Does anyone use KW when talking about the power of their engine? I note that the sports mode screen states power in KW which means bugger all to me as I don’t see why I should have to convert it in my head.
Again, I hope there’s a setting to change to BHP that I haven’t yet discovered |

That why some engines seem to heave strange numbers in HP but are round numbers in Kw. Some taxes and insurances are more expensive above a certain Kw/hp that's why it is limited by the manufacturer to be in a more interesting tax scale. But you are correct. Nobody uses this like that in real life. |
