2024 X5 40i Auto Start-Stop Not Smooth

My previous X5 was a 2022 45e so it spoiled me on the start-stop. The 45e was very smooth when switching on ICE.

With the 2024 40i, the X5 shakes a bit when the engine turns back on after it stops. If I am parked and it comes on to heat the car, you can feel it fire up. I expected this to be a little smoother with the 48V system.

I may well end up just coding the start-stop off.

My 40i with 48V was smooth when starting up, I now have the 50i without 48V and that is ok compared with previous cars I have had with start stop.

Once up to temp, my non-48v 40i is often imperceptible when it starts up/goes off. It idles very smooth too.

If it is not dead silent in the car I cannot tell if the engine is running or not, or when it starts up using the auto start/stop - many a time I've pressed the engine start button thinking I'm turning the engine ON, when its actually already ON and I end up turning it OFF.

2024 x5 xdrive 40i here as well. It’s hit or miss. I’m sitting in the car right now in a parking far-age and the start stop engaged the engine and it absolutely shuttered the entire car. So much so I just google searched to see if others experience this and this post came up! It’s colder today than previous days so perhaps it had to do with that but the car is already up to temp.

Wish there was a way to turn it off. I hope it’s undetectable in my 25 X5 though knowing my luck it probably won’t.

I'm very sensitive to the start-stop shudder and had it coded out of many previous BMWs. I understand that it no longer can be coded in our 2024 X6 40i LCI and I'm OK with that, as I find the shudder so gentle as to be almost imperceptible.

I think the issue is when the starter motor alone restarts the engine, such as when parked. When the start up is coordinated with the 48v assist when the car begins to move is very smooth. This is activated when you release your foot from the brake pedal. In extreme temperatures or a long stop time the engine starter motor alone will start the engine to maintain a hvac temp or battery charge.

2024 x40i owner here and I get the shudder as well. Before purchasing the X5 I saw many folks saying they couldn’t even notice when it turned off. First time auto-shut off happened it spooked me as I thought something was wrong. Eventually realized that I get a shutter every time it happens. Figured I’d mention it to the Service Advisor when I have my first maintenance visit later this year.

2024 X5 x40i. 90% of the time it is smooth, the only way I know is by observing the tach. 10% of the time it shudders, even when the engine is warm. It seems to shutter when I am at a stop light for an extended period and I still have my foot on the brake, and the engine restarts for the AC.

In those circumstances wouldn't it be better just to flick the shift lever to "S" keeping the engine and AC running? then flick it back to "D" as you drive off.

Same here, 2024 40i with aprox 1400 miles, shutters every time. Sometimes it's more noticeable than others, to the point that I wonder if something is wrong. I expected much smoother.

I paid close attention to this and can confirm the shudder only happens when the car is stopped and the auto/start stop turns the engine on for climate control purposes. Very little to no felt shudder when going from a stop to a go.

Mine is very smooth when it restarts, very little shudder but I think people should realize when the motor turns back on, theres an explosion of 6 cylinders firing up so your going to have a shudder just from that!

I also love when your sitting at a light and the engine is off waiting for the red light to expire, if your not paying attention and multi-tasking at the light, when the car in front of you starts to move, the car fires back up on its own and the slight shudder brings you back in saying "wakeup, its time to move!"
Thats awesome!
