Unpreferable charging when HV battery is very low
I found my 2022 45e ignores any charging time slot and departure plan and just keeps charging without delays if, at the time of plugging in, the HV battery has less than 1 mile remaining. It does this even if there are sufficiently many hours in the slot for a full charge before the planned departure time.
In contrast, if the HV battery has several miles remaining, my 45e will behave differently. It will start charging immediately and only stop a few seconds later (probably to measure the EVSE wattage and calculate the time needed for full charge) and then waits until the beginning of the set time slot. Has anyone witnessed the same to yours? |

I think it's intentional...if the battery is less than about 10%, and it gets really cold out, it can be damaged, or waste more energy and slow the whole process to charge the thing...neither super hot nor super cold batteries can be charged at full rate. I had an i3 for years, and it did this. But, the i3 also had battery heaters, so it could be brought up to closer to the ideal temperature if they were cold, which the x5 doesn't have.

Today I got home with 1% remaining in the HV battery. Plug it in and let it charge. The charging stopped after I checked several minutes later at 3%. I guess BMW knows what they are doing except that they don't explain it in the manual. |
