I just leased a 2020 M50i so I'm new to the X5 scene.

Would like to know if anyone out there with a M50i is rolling on 20" aftermarket wheels with the M-Sport brakes? Specifically BBS or HRE FlowForm?

I'm asking because I want to pick up a set of HRE FlowForm wheels, but two different dealers have said that HRE cannot confirm fitment and that I'd be a test subject. Since I don't have a local HRE dealer I'd have to have the wheels shipped to me and if they don't fit then I'd have to ship them back which adds a lot of cost.

Thanks in advance if anyone has done this, and please send pics if you don't mind.

PS: Before someone suggests going bigger, the winter tires I need only come in a 20" diameter as the largest size so that's the max.

I thought I saw a guy on here with a set of HRE's, in bronze I believe. Hopefully he post up in here. You can also contact HRE direct, and they can recommend a spec'd wheel that would work and you can then order that spec from a dealer I am sure. Or you can contact iND as they are SUPER knowledgeable on pretty much everything when it comes to BMW and aftermarket items.

Checking on CarId, for 20" they've sizes that match the stock 9" size for the front and would push the rear towards the outside fender by 5mm more than the stock 10.5" if you're looking for a staggered setup. (Just looked at the one style of wheel). I think the only issue would be if the rim clears the brake calipers, but it says it's a guaranteed fit for the 9" so I'd assume it's good. (You could likely go with a 275 square setup too with the 10.5" too with those specs)

Thanks for the responses so far guys. All my research matches those numbers as well, but the dealers I was in touch with couldn't confirm fitment over the brake calipers.

I just put in emails to HRE and IND and will report back with my findings.

Worst case scenario I might try to convince a retailer to ship me a test wheel to try & I can ship it back to them.

I'm running 20x9, 5x112, 66.6 CB and 38 ET/offset square setup for my winters and it clears the M Sport brakes. +35 is what BMW recommends though. Tires are 275/25/20 just like the post above.

Update:

I heard back directly from HRE. Unfortunately their 20" and 21" FlowForm wheels will NOT work for the M50i. It's not a sizing issue (the sizes previously mentioned in this thread should fit fine), but it's actually a load rating issue.

The rep told me that their 20" and 21" wheels are not load rated for SUVs and that only their 22" wheels are rated for heavy vehicles like the M50i.

Since my winter tires do not come in 22" diameter I guess I need to either pick new tires or pick new wheels.

Stay tuned for more.

Interesting. Did they tell you what the load rating was for the 20"?

HRE didn't provide any specifics. Just indicated that they didn't meet BMWs requirements.

BBS was more specific. They stated that BMW requires a minimum load of 690kg for the front axle and 935kg for the rear axle. BBS said that since their 20" CIR wheels are rated for a maximum of 790kg that they cannot recommend them.

Since I won't be using the X5 to tow anything heavy I did the math and even asked if I could still buy the CIRs if I wasn't going to tow anything because the weight of the X5 and four 75kg adults = 2725kg = 691kg/corner. BBS still said no.

Thanks for the info, good to know when shopping aftermarket!

I think the 22" HRE I have ordered are rated for 900kg. It's rare there's more than 2 people in it.
Another odd thing that's been mentioned in other posts is that the payload on the M50i is only 400kg. 4 guys @ 225lbs each and you're at the limit!??

I have done a few sets of Vossen Hybrid Forged on X7.
As far as I know, Vossen HybridForged 20", 21" and 22" are rated for SUV.
