Question Ordered X5 30d Phytonic Blue

Hi there,

I need to replace my current daily, a X5 30d from 2003 with manual transmission ( ) and was about to go for a 340i Touring when the dealership let me do a test drive of a 340i and a G05 X5 gen.
I felt in love again for the X5 space and more "luxury" interior finitions. Then my dealership came up with a deal I can't refuse on the X5 saying bye bye to the 340i Touring.

In a couple of days I've to go back to the dealership to order the X5 and I'm puzzled on the color choice: Ametrin Metallic or Phytonic Blue. I do really like the Phytonic blue which looks sporty and it's not that common here around in Switzerland. But now my friends are pushing me to go for the Ametrin Metallic. I'm a huge fan of the amethyst metallic color from Porsche, so when I saw the Ametrin Metallic I started to doubt.

For the lucky ones here around who saw an Ametrin Metallic BMW in real, is the Ametrin purple enough? I'm afraid this color has too much "brown" shades (which I'm not a huge fan) and not enough purple ones. There is not that much pictures or vids with this color on the Internet and I feel most of the time the picture doesn't give justice to the purple shades of the color.

Any feedback on this will be very appreciated.

Attached the two specs I've in my mind.

I really wanted to like Ametrin and was hoping to have it for my next one. I loved what I saw in pictures but I have seen it twice now in person and just don't care for it. I love it when the sun is shining on it as it brings out the purplish hue that I want. Unfortunately in shadows it looks like a bad shade of brown to me and it turns me off.

The other month I was down at my dealership and they had one and I mentioned it to my sales manager. He said he never noticed the brown so I said we should take a walk out. The sun was on the other side of the X5 so as we were walking towards it he said right away he saw what I meant by it looking like a brown car.

Obviously color choices are a personal thing so my experience, or any one else's, shouldn't really effect how you feel about a color.

As TurtleBoy mentioned, color selection is subjective and personal. I personally went with Phytonic Blue but also appreciate the uniqueness of Ametrin.

Here are a couple of links to member posts of their Ametrin X5s:

Hey, after reading your post I was out riding and saw the color X5 you were talking about. Definitely looks brown from a distance, not until it was next to me did it look purple. Good look

Interesting how different Phytonic looks under the different lighting. In the gas station pic, it pops and looks so bright, almost reminds me of the MBB on X5M. Not quite the same but intensity of blue, but definitely reminds me of it.

Ja, I agree. With ultra very bright white LEDs, PB pops nicely... wish lighting could be that nice all day long, ROFL. Otherwise it's lovely medium blue - I like it, not too dark compared to other X5 colors.

Love the Phytonic with the blue brembo breaks and blue parts in the front lighting.

I haven't seen any Ametrin Metallic around, so it would probably turn heads. I do not see it even as an option for my X5 build (US website), so that's is pretty interesting how BMW changes options for each market.

Ametrin was available for MY20 USA X5s. BMWNA removed a lot of the Priority 1 options - paints and full leather Merino on the 40i and other options - soft close doors, acoustic glass, etc - for both 40i and M50i models.

First sorry I took so long to answer and thank you a lot for your helpful answers. I ordered my X5 in Phytonic blue at the end two weeks ago now I guess.

Way too much brown shades at the end for me in the Ametrin. It's a shame that without direct lights on it it's not turning black but weird brown.

My X5 went already in production, I went for a 30d as the dealearship had already an allocation in the production line. I had a good discount on it (same as if the car was already in physically in stock) and I was able to pick the options I wanted expect the motor.

Expecting delivery is on the first week of November. I can't wait

Totally sharing your point of view after a lot of research on the internet. Thanks for sharing your experience with this color btw

Was it just the offer that changed your mind to X5? Because M340i touring looks really nice and I heard it's more balanced compared to sedan. Can you describe the ride difference? I know the center of gravity is definitely lower and it's more fun. I do think sometimes that maybe I should've went for the touring.

It's not really the ride difference based on the driving experience that made me pick the X5. For driving a X5 for years now, I felt terribly cramped in the 3 series.
It's a great car with great interior quality for its target market. But for me, not enough room for my legs etc. And the interior quality you can have with a X5 is clearly one good step beyond in my opinion.

At the end, the X5 discounted was only 6k more expensive than the M340i with already good discount applied. And as it's for daily usage and for fun I've my classic 911, I picked the X5.

Counting days now. I've no news from the dealership but the car is still planned to arrive beginning of November.
It's even harder as the dealership is on my daily commute so I'm desperately waiting to see it on the parking lot waiting for me.

In the meantime it's time to prepare my actual X5 E53 for sale. Maybe I'm the only one but I think the E53 is aging quite well. I will miss the manual gearbox and shifting gears like I'm driving a fast car
Few pictures of mine.
