Kick to open tailgate

Have had no luck getting the tailgate to open via kick.

Searched through the manual and didn't see this feature listed. However, I know members here do in fact have it (https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1584443 )

Is there a hidden setting, or some special conditions to enable kick to open?

Update: just ran into on another thread,

"I had emailed BMW Genius regarding this same question a few weeks ago and they wrote back with this: "Comfort Access includes the ability to open and close the tailgate using the Smart Trunk "Kick to Open" procedure. If the vehicle is equipped with the trailer hitch time of production, this feature is removed. "

I do have the trailer hitch preinstalled. No kicking for me...

Is that an American limitation?

I'm in Sweden and have the euro factory trailer hitch and the kick works for me. Not always though.......

Euro trailer is designed differently than the US ones.

Kick To Open

My X5 tailgate works perfectly. I don’t “kick” but wave my foot under the rear bumper. It just takes one right to left foot wave to trigger the opening.

If you have the north America tow package then you don't have kick to open as BMW decided to make the tow package incompatible with the sensor

On X5s I've test driven, opening the trunk with the remote or in-cabin button electrically opens the top section.
The lower part remains closed.
However, watching videos etc, suggests a variant exists where both top and bottom auto-open.
Is this a special, optional, feature or configurable in iDrive?
If optional, what's the option named?

Configurable in iDrive
You must have comfort access for the lower part to open automatically however, otherwise it's not powered.

That's is correct, you can program upper or both. Like mentioned above, you must have comfort acces, I think it is standard in the US , but not in Europe, without the lower part is manual. Some threads of UK owners about this.

Brilliant! The amount of times I’ve kicked the crap out of the underneath of my car can’t be good for my foot!

I was also having this issue but found the solution.

Instead of kick to open, try sweeping your foot underneath the middle of the car. I do a quick left foot left-to-right sweep and it opens 100% of the time.
