Sky lounge option

What does it do exactly? Is there a good thread or website for more info? I can't really tell much from the BMW site.

It’s all twinkly and pretty. Looks like a Vegas limo at night!
Some great YouTube vids if you search.

Imbedded reflectors in the sunroof (moonroof?) mirror the interior LED setup with edge lighting:

It really doesn't do anything. I actually wouldn't option it, if I could take it out, but it comes in a package. In a city environment, it's rarely dark enough for it to work as expected. The glass roof simply has etching in it to pick up the color from the LED lights along the outer edge. I'm more annoyed with the etching during daylight than any enjoyment from night driving. Maybe it's just me though.

I love it at night. I think it looks great. I've had passengers compliment it when they saw it. If it wasn't part of a separate package I wouldn't option it.

its a cool option, i opted for it for my personal car. I think along with the other LEDs in the interior makes for a cool look/feature

I have it and it complements the LED night interior nicely. It's a look - not really functional except for appearance, but it does "luxury up" the interior at night.

Think it has 15000 LEDs according to the BMW press release, although I have a feeling you could be right. This has been misinterpreted into 15000 LEDs when it actually is as you say

Agreed I love it, i would also add driving assistance pro so as the driver you can look behind you and actually see the full sky lounge experience without rear ending someone. Just a thought.

I wanted this option but was surprised to find only few X5s are optioned with exec pkg, at least on dealer lots.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the tilting and retracting sunroof. Perhaps that was too obvious. Not sure if it's an option without the sky lounge.

you can tilt and retract the sunroof with the sky lounge option. it just dims the lights when you tilt/retract the portion of the roof that's open.

i prefer to think of the sky lounge as a poor man's rolls royce starlight headliner.

I think the RR starlight looks kinda dated. Only 1300 white fiberoptic cables and even when a star shoots it looks like a mid 1970’s tech effect you would find in a van. As a $12k option and eliminates the pano roof, I would think RR could do something more spectacular like a projection system. Sky lounge looks so much more high tech and contemporary.

yep, i was half joking. I think it looks tacky. Tacky in a car, tacky in someone's theater room. I also wouldn't give up my sunroof for that gimmicky thing either. What would have been cooler is to have an electrochromatic roof like the ones mercedes has. until then, i'll 'settle' for the sky lounge which i think looks fantastic.

as far as I remember, there isn't a separate option for it. I think if you turned off all ambient lighting, it would turn that off as well

I normally love this type of stuff....but I've had the Sky Lounge in 750i and X7 loaners and wasn't that impressed. Like others have said, it's not that bright and it's more towards the edges.

It's a total gimmick. I had it on the car I had on extended test.....the novelty wears off as the X5 already has nicer interior lighting. In urban settings you don't notice it plus in the day it looks straight out of a 1990s MPV/Minivan like the Renault Espace because its not one single pane of glass. The only thing I preferred on the 2020 Rang Rover Sport I had was it's pan-roof. Far more elegant.

Fair comment, but it’s only as pointless as the crafted glass clarity, which I wouldn’t be without. When you add all these little gimmicks together they sort of make sense and lift the whole level of the interior. I personally think it’s a brilliant concept and design. I can close the roof shade for total darkness, and then wow it up with a big reveal open when I have passengers. It’s just bright enough, any brighter and it would be a distraction.

+1, the whole X5 is a gimmick if we're going to be strict on definitions; or the m-package, or black trim, or ///m brakes, or, or, or, ...

At the end of the day the question is does the feature provide you with a little joy or pleasure? That's the whole point of luxury: enjoyable gimmicks.

It's a nice extra and the only function is ambience. Classy look added though. Passengers compliment it and kids think its pretty cool.

I enjoy the ambience it provides with the updated interior lighting. Colour options same as interior lighting (blue, orange, gold, lilac, green and white if I remember right)

When you have the sunroof open, the lights do turn off in the first section of glass.
