Passenger Side Blind Spot Detection?

Perhaps I don't comprehend how the system works, but I'm totally disappointed with the current BMW blind spot detection on the passenger side. Sometimes the triangle lights up, and sometimes it doesn't. In contrast with the driver's side, which lights up consistently, I find the passenger side (right side here in the USA) doesn't always light up when passing a car. I thought it might have been my car, but when I dropped the car at the shop the loaner X3 they gave me worked the same. Has anyone else noticed a difference between the driver's side and the passenger's side? I wouldn't care except its a safety issue, and if you use the automatic lane change it won't see the a car.

Sorry for the rant, I couldn't help it...

There is no need for Blindspot detectors in reality if you learn to set your mirrors correctly you will never need to rely on Blindspot detectors. Many years ago I picked up an X6 with BMW PDC delivery in SC. In the classroom instruction they taught us how to set mirrors. try to Google it and watch a YouTube video but basically once you set your mirrors correctly u will never go back to driving any vehicle without setting the mirrors to avoid all blind spots

I have noticed a difference but as far as I can tell, the system takes into account the speed differential between the two vehicles and if the vehicle will be in your blind spot for any significant period of time. When passing a slower vehicle, the blind spot may not be needed since by the time you would turn into that lane you will be past the vehicle. You see the light longer on the driver's side since the vehicle passing you is approaching and overtaking you.

The automatic lane change uses sensors to determine whether it is safe to execute the lane change and will not turn into a lane if there is a vehicle there so no need to worry about that.

Mine work great but the computer does take a lot of factors in before the warning unlike a more simplistic blind spot system in other cars. Next time you don’t think it’s accurately warning you, try putting on your turn signal that side and see what the system does. I never 100% trust any of these systems but when you are pounding miles on a trip, it is like a extra set of eyes looking out for you taking away some fatigue.

Mine work great also. We have been driving highways (for the first time in this car) this past week and they have alerted me several times when I didn’t see a car next to me.

I know the mirror setup system, but for some reason I can’t get the passenger side just right. And my husband changes them when he drives.

We have a lot more driving to do, I’ll take a closer look.

Looking forward to an improvement over Gen 1. Previously, the X5 BSD only activated above 30 mph; I understand this one can be set to a lower speed. One thing I've appreciated on our Q7s is the LARGE blinking lights on the side of the mirror that come on at logical speeds. It's a valuable aid to the driver - in addition to setting the correct mirror angle, and just another safety adjunct that might prevent an accident. Just like a backup camera, it might be one of those mandated systems in the future, which wouldn't be a bad thing. A biplane flies just fine, but radar is nice.

Right on - It detects speed deferential. If you are crawling next to someone you do not need it - you need it when someone flies into my blind spot especially at an angle.

I love that BMW systems are programmed with aggressive driver in mind and not like blend Audi systems that are always blinking and you finally stop paying attention to them or turn them off.

Jeep is the same way. Driving in Philly traffic will drive you crazy in a Jeep to the point you ignore any and all warnings from the Jeep system.

I appreciate the perspective that a more intelligent system shouldn't go off anytime a car is in the blind spot, but somehow that doesn't feel right. But the car was checked out at the dealer and no issues were found. They gave me a loaner X3 that had identical blind spot response as mine. I find it strange (after coming from a MB GLE) but so be it. Thanks - I'll add it to the list of small annoyances

No. Unless you count the horn sounding when you start to merge and cut off the other vehicle

...there is no audible warning (gawd, that could get annoying real fast)...but along with the visual warning in the mirror...the steering wheel vibrates if there's a vehicle in the blind spot and you attempt to change lanes. See the partial info below about lane change warning taken from the TIS website:

It will also use steering intervention, if you have it enabled, to keep you from turning into a car beside you.

Mine's working great, but does anyone know if you can make it beep, not just light up?
In my Wrangler, the system beeps when I signal and there's a car in my blind spot so I just keep my attention to the front in congested LA traffic. I find the beep pretty helpful.

I think you get the beep from the other vehicle your about to ram into, a very clever system, BMW think of everything
