2021 X5 40i - Tachometer vs "Power Meter"

While I love my new 2021 40i, it's always bugged me that, in Comfort Mode, at least, the default gauge on the right side of the instrument display is "Power Meter". Seems gimmicky and, frankly, I'm not sure how to interpret it.

I've gone through the iDrive settings to switch the display to Tachometer, but it never sticks - the next day, the display defaults to Power Meter. I've checked and unchecked "Driving Mode" view - neither setting sets the tach as default for Comfort driving mode. Genius recommended doing a reset of iDrive....done. But still reverts to Power Meter, not Tachometer.

I haven't seen this issue posted before so, maybe everyone on the forum drives in Sport Mode (where tach IS the default), or no one else is bothered by this, or maybe my iDrive has a unique bug?

It may help if you post pictures of what you are seeing. I always have the tach on my right side no matter what mode I'm driving in which is usually Comfort or Adaptive.

In the 45e we only have the tachometer in sport.

I don't miss it at all in other modes. I got used to live with the power meter. Probably because in electric the tach is useless and when I drive in hybrid or adaptive I have enough info with the power meter.

The power meter shows at what % of power the car switches from electric to ICE so it makes sense to have that info.

And when driving on fuel I trust the gearbox on switching gears. I don't really need to see the rpm.

Maybe for me it is even more valuable to know that I am at 30% of power and I have 70% left when needed?

Didn't Rolls Royce has a reserved power meter instead of a tachometer as well? Isn't BMW the parent company of RR? That would explain..

Just to be sure, check to make sure you're logged into a personal profile when you change it to tachometer. Guest setting always reverts to default/factory setting.

Definitely not on the guest user

That's a good suggestion, but no. Power Meter seems to be the default for all drive modes except for Sport. Had a Genius attempt to walk me thru resetting it, including resetting iDrive but no again. At least for the 2021, power meter seems to be the default right hand instrument screen.

What's frustrating is that like most of us, the "meaning" and implications (eg red zone, ideal shift points) of a tach has become intuitive over the years, and across vehicles. But the power meter? Plus, while sure I can select Sport with a button push, switching to Tachometer from other drive modes requires a few screens.

As someone said in this thread, coding may be the only way out.

OP did you figure out a solution? My 2021 also has this issue, setting to tachometer would be not saved to the driver profile at all.

They 45e switche pretty seemlessly between ICE and battery power

A tachometer would be on and off quite a bit in hybrid mode and perhaps look a bit odd

Personally I would like the always on option but I’m a bit obsessive

I got my 2021 X5 at the end of May and set the right side to tach as soon as I got it home. Stays like that all the time now for me, in any mode and after every start up. Weird!

The problem went away at the next idrive update.
So now the screen shows tach during, for example Comfort and Sport modes, and shows the Power Meter during Eco.

Good luck!

Awesome! I was going to throw in my hat and say the above switching to power meter doesn't happen to me, I am on the latest software and was going to suggest and update through iDrive.
