The only M car that honestly deserves to have "Competition" as a separate model/trim versus a package was the M2 because it received an entirely different engine and numerous upgrades, which was a rare and unique situation anyways due to the EU-Regulations that the N55 would not have passed.
Agreed, having a little more power and minor suspension change does make the car stand out, but most owners won't cough up the cost for the package.

They are seeing which marketing strategy will sell more. Loved by shareholders, hated by enthusiasts and purists.

Same happened with 17 to 18 X5m where the drivers assistance package was rolled up with executive package.

I might be wrong, and I hope I am. But, that seems to be the only answer as to why this decision is made.
No. At least not here in Canada. All M cars with a Competition equivalent are subjected to the same interest/residual rate.

I think the point is that there is no MY2021 X5MC. A quick check on bmwusa.com confirms this. No competition model of any kind other than M2C.

Now, go into the "build your own tool" on the X3M or X5M and you'll see that on the options page there is a $7-9k "Competition Package" option alongside stuff like "Executive package". So for MY2021 only for some reason, they went back to the old system where it's just a package and not a separate model.
Why change the name when the equipment added is the same, right?

I think it's a US thing as we only get the X5/X6M competition models over here

BMW Execs be like "Make it a package and we can only charge $4K. Make it a trim, we can charge $12K. A Trim it is!"

The car will hold it's value better as a model rather than a package. Even if it's not rational, options do not hold their value as well as a model.

Owners? You mean buyers!

Non-Competition F95's & F96 cars sit longer at the dealer than one with the package. Especially here in NY and most other markets. The roughly $9k for the Competition pack or model isn't significant on a $100k+ car IMO.

Seems to be true for the F90 M5's and the M8's, to an extent.

Agreed. Not saying this is true for everyone, but for me I found myself in the territory of "if I'm spending 100k+ on a car, I'm not going to even risk having the 'I should have bought X'" conversation with myself. Same with the BW audio system.

It is no flip flop, it is consistent with the strategy that was announced several years back. Competition is now a model designation as part of the hierarchy of ///M cars:

base -> competition -> CS -> CSL

The M2 is the oddball here, where the base was not produced alongside the competition when the later was launched, and this simply has to do with emissions compliance (the N55 was too old).
Same for the F80. The Competition came later.

There never was a "competition" model for the F80. It was an options package that could be added to the base car, but the base car could still be ordered without the competition package. And yes, the option was added later in the life cycle.

The difference with the M2, is that the M2competition was its own model designation and the "base" M2 was not offered alongside.
