50e Check engine but no entries?

I tried an obd2 scanner and it also said no codes. Tried resetting drive turn it off and back on several times but it still shows. Called dealer to ask for help, they said service dept. is closed for the weekend and to call BMW roadside assistance. Called them, the car uploaded data to them, they also said they don’t see anything but I can keep driving it. Kept driving and it didn’t go away. What does this mean? My 50e is barely at 600 miles.

I saw that post but I thought that was a different issue, one that provided a code or info on what was wrong. Sorry if I misunderstood and started a duplicate thread.

I have a 50e that I took delivery in August (Aug 2 build date). I have had the dreaded check engine light a few times. What the dealer told me is that my L1 charger is having power quality issues from my house. I am waiting on a 220v line to be put in so I have been using 110v. I do have the L1 charger plugged in to a short extension cord (correct rating). That may be the root of my issue.

“Power Quality” issues? That’s a new one.

That was my thought as well, when I get the 220 line in we will see what happens.

it has been an issue to me previously on X3 and X5e, but not sure if it applies to you.

Unfortunately you may be heading down the same path as many of us. I purchased mine in September (August build) and had a couple CEL's that cleared in October and November. The dealer said they could not pull these codes because they cleared themselves. It came on and stayed on in early January and they have been trying to find the problem ever since

I had a CEL for a 'nonsense' error take a full week to auto-reset to off. No actual problem(s) the whole time. The fact that there are no codes pretty much suggests software, no?

There is a code in there somewhere. BMW will be able to see it or maybe you can pull the telemetric report which will show the fault codes

Yep. All of my check engine lights and drivetrain warnings went away on their own after a day. However, the BMW dealer was able to see fault codes on all five of my visits and ended up replacing modules, and doing reprogramming.

To be clear, I assumed the OP's scanner was reliable but apparently some will not detect all manufacturer-specific codes. Shrug.

To give an update, the CEL light was on for a few days and went away after a software update. There was no entries in my cheap scanner or anything shown in the car. It came back on again for a week, again with no indications as to what is wrong, decided to take it to the dealer and right when I got there the light turned off! They took it anyway and they said they are looking into it, it seemed like they could read something related to emissions but still waiting to hear back.

Please report back to tell us what your dealer did to address.

I was told the CEL was from the 'sme controller unit', apparently some control unit to the engine, that triggered 'erroneously' - it was on for a week, turned off after a software update, then came back on for another week, then turned off when I brought it to the dealer - so they are saying it's all good it didn't come back on, we'll see I guess.

Ah , the “erroneous error” explanation. Unfortunately, you’ll probably see it again if your dealer didn’t do something tangible to address.

You were right sir, it came back on again, for no reason, no faults displayed. Back to the dealer it goes I guess. Hopefully we don't just keep playing the clearing the code game until the root cause presents itself and it has to be towed to the dealer.
