My X5 xdrive50i Front Differential failed at 40K!! And I'm out of warranty

Are there any other options rather than replacing the differential? At least a temporary option.

One German garage advised to disconnect the driveshaft so the car will only drive rear wheels. Will there be any side effects?

Help

I am sure if you disconnect without reprogramming you will get errors as the car detects the disconnect - perhaps this if it applies to G05? https://www.xautomotive.com/products/xdelete

I am not an expert and I am not recommending anything - simple responding to your question above.

What year is the x5 ? I’ve had this problem with Land Rovers over the years and what I started doing was getting a rebuild kit for the dif and having a local shop that specializes in transmissions and differentials to rebuild it much cheaper

specialized shop in transmission and diffs should be able to provide a re-build, which should be much cheaper

that's my route in case if it ever happens

Thats concerning as mine hasn't even hit 23K yet. Granted theirs is a 50i, but I would guess its using the same parts.

Update.

Turns out the differential is fine but there’s a leak as shown in the pictures which reduced the amount of oil inside, and that caused the car to shake/ vibrate when turning right & left or increasing the speed. I think this can be easily fixed by closing the leaking areas & refill the oil in any garage other than the dealer. The dealer cannot fix it. They want to replace the whole differential which is too expensive. Cost around 17k usd here in Saudi Arabia.

Mine too - 2020 X5M50I front differential failure

Bought my 2020 X5 M50i brand new in Aug 2019 at the dealer and only service it there. Noticed a weird grinding noise, thought it was brakes but only happened on acceleration. Took to dealer yestereday and front differential is shot, driveshaft not running true, and the transfer case is likely also shot. $15K repair estimate (total). Was informed that BMW NA will offset potentially half or more of the repair cost. 46k miles.

Does anyone know if the 40i has a different differential than the M50?

Just brought in mine - 2020 X5 M50i, 53k miles. Making weird grinding noise at low RPM (1200 to 1900) during acceleration. Shot front diff. Coincidentally, there was an issue with the transfer case a couple weeks back where I would feel a shutter at very low speeds when the steering wheel was a full lock - are they related? Dealer gave me budget to replace front diff at $8k. I asked for BWM NA good will since I'm slightly out of warranty and this is insane to think a major drivetrain component could fail this early. Waiting to hear back.

Sorry to hear.

I posted the comment about these things are great while in warranty , but once out, all bets are off. Better to keep for the 3-4 lease/finance and turn them over once out of lease or warranty.

If one can't do simple things like plugs/coils/brakes, some fluid changes, brakes, rotors - things can expensive when OOW. I can only wonder what a module replacement may run
