Hello all and happy new year. I am about to pull the trigger on a X5. I am trying to decide 40i vs m50i. Test drove both and love the sound and power of that powerful V8. Did my research online on that N63 engine and found so many issues, especially this high oil consumption problem. Considsring that the 2020 m50i outputs even more than 2019 50i, I have serious concerns about the longevity of this engine. My plan was to keep the car, so I am afraid one day I will be facing a huge bill to fix this issue. Anyone can share their thoughts on this? Thanks

My point of view: you should never own a modern BMW out of warranty. So get an extended warranty and enjoy the car for 7 years less a day.

Coming from a Honda owner experience, maybe I need to lower my expectations about the reliability of BMW? Trade off between reliability and power, would the N55 in the 40i be a more balanced than the N63?

But while bimmers are driver's cars through and through, their general reliability has always been just average, yet always expensive to repair. Plus, in G05, there is so much tech that I feel it is guaranteed to be irreparable in a practical sense outside BMW dealership services (including self) when that starts to decay with age. So "only under warranty" is going to be my bimmer rule from X5 forward. Oh, you were asking about the relative reliability of the two engines. Don't know, but with above philosophy, doesn't matter.

Sorry...got off point, I do think the I6 is and always has been their star in the engine lineup. Personally, while you may like the rumble and power of the V8, I want the sweet smoothness of the I6 for my daily driver and travel vehicle. |

50i uses the N63TU3 (slightly different variants in 50i and M50i). This is third generation of the engine. I wouldn't be concerned about problems with the earlier versions.

The take away..... It is now a non issue. This is like tearing apart today’s current 911 engine because it’s in the same place as the 911 engines that had IMS issues 15 years ago. |

While this guy is right that the N63 has struggled with heat, oil consumption, etc. he did the 50i models a disservice by lumping them all together. The G05/G07 uses the technical update 3 version which has additional improvements including better heat shielding to protect components in the vee. This engine was first used during 2018 for 2019 G05/G07. Where he's also wrong is he includes the 650i in the same sentence while discussing other models including the new 7 series, etc. The 650i never even used technical update 2 of the N63. The 650i used the original N63 and then the first technical update.

I also think the inline 6 is the way to go for most people. I have the same engine in my 540i and it is just so satisfying in both the X5 and 540i.
The only BMW V8 i have driven was in a 2018 7 series that i was briefly thinking about trading in my 540i for but I changed my mind after the test drive. It was very hard to drive smoothly. It had too much torque. I felt like it just wanted to take off regardless of throttle pressure. If you were shopping for an X7, i would say definitely get the V8 because the inline 6 struggles to move that beast around with the same ease as in the X5. |
