For those who are interested… 3 different dealerships (Toyota, BMW, and CarMax) all offered me $80k as a trade in this week. I was mainly curious. Not doing it.
Sticker price was just shy of $106k when I bought in August.

Also, I absolutely LOVE this machine. It’s as close to perfect (IMO) as an SUV can get for $100k. Recent SUVs include 2017 Audi Q7, 2021 Audi SQ8, 2022 BMW X5 M50i. I’m glad I didn’t go with the 40i or the full M. However, I can see how both could be justified as all 3 options are very well done. Again, just me and my specific use. I have 2 kids, 3 and 1.5. No animals. I’m averaging 21 MPG. I’ll be at 8,000 miles by the end of April. I probably drive in comfort mode 95% of the time. The car has so much power in comfort mode. Going into full sport plus is really just to humor myself every so often.

I have only seen one of these on the road since last August.

The steering is one of my favorite things about this vehicle. So smooth and effortless. It does not have the adaptive M suspension professional option.

As a family we mostly use the wife’s 2021 Honda Passport Elite, which I also think is a great car for $50k! We will probably upgrade to a 2025 refresh next year for her and us as a family hauler.

That’s it!

The SQ8 was a very special purchase for me. Heck I had a dream about the dang car after over a month of consideration and the next day I went and bought it. No judgement! It was my first, what I would consider, very expensive car, and to date my most expensive at $111,000. And that was 3.5 years ago. They are more expensive today for essentially the same car. In some ways I wish I would have kept that car for at least three years, but having kids made me do silly things during the Covid years. The SQ8 is just as magical in many ways, but what I like more about the X5 M60i is the full-SUV size, mainly the rear window view and trunk height. The SQ8 was sleeker and more aggressive looking, like the X6, while the X5 is more of a sleeper IMO. The SQ8 was loud... when I started it in my garage the whole house knew. The X5 M60i is much quieter, and I know I'm the odd man out with this preference.

The upgrade to the M60i from the M50i was a smart one. I actually really prefer the lack of buttons and love the new MMI. It's so sleek and clean and I rarely mess with the climate functions as the car stays so comfortable around the 67 degree setting in any weather. The car (engine, transmission, handling) seems more responsive to me in about every way. And the exterior is more appealing with the upgraded M look. I even had the adaptive M suspension professional on the M50i. My M60i has the B&W sound system which sounds incredible and I wanted that upgrade as well, which the M50i didn't have.

All I can think of at the moment.

Do you do a lot of highway driving? The 21 mpg avg is very impressive! When I take my m50i on long road trip I was getting 21-22 mpg at 75-80 mph. BTW beautiful vehicle love the color

I have a similar spec as yours and agree with many of your points. I also think the exhaust sounds good, and am glad it is not any louder. I’ve had mine about two months and have 1,200 miles and love it so far. I wanted the air suspension because I had some concerns about the ride quality with the 22” wheels. It rides great.

I completely agree about the exhaust sound. I understand that some of the sound is synthetic, but it sounds great when I want it to but still retains the ability to make it silent on the highway. It doesn't bother me in the slightest that some of the sound may be fake.

I was very close to installing a mid pipe, but I'm glad I didn't.

So, according to those dealers they depreciated your 8 month old, 8K miles BMW by $26K...isn't that something? of course, they would turn around and sell it for $90K and make a good profit. For you is a lose-lose, for them a win-win.

Exactly! Pretty ridiculous. I’m happy to continue to win by keeping the car.

Wait till he sees the depreciation in two years. The first year is kind of mild. It’ll be around 43,000 higher mileage look for 48,000 in Depreciation

The residual value on a 36/10 lease for the M60i is 52%. Not like the good ole days of BMW leases.

You mean when leases were heavily subsidized by BMW. Real life residuals always sucked on BMWs…they are depreciation machines.

I have bought 3 BMWs so far, lightly used with 10k to 20k miles and paid around 60% of MSRP and sold then 4-5 years later and got around a third of their value. I also got the extended warranty….across all of them I saved over $100K. I chose this path over leasing….the current gen X5 could easily last 8-10 years without major issues. They are very well built. IMHO.

Yeaaa all good. This is my 5th BMW. I’m no stranger to this happening. I would have bought a Toyota 4Runner if I cared more about holding value. Just a part of the journey of driving a BMW.

I believe these middle M models (M40…M50… M60) seem to depreciate even more. Seems like the majority of the market prefer to go in either direction (40i or full M), where I personally love the middle M models. This is my 3rd one (m340i and X5 M50i previously) I think Audi’s S models hold values better as the middle models than BMWs. I bought a new 2024 Audi RS3 in January for $68k and sold it March for $72k.

I’m in it for what it is. I was only sharing my experience 8 months later so that if someone wasn’t familiar with such a value drop they might read this and give some additional consideration.

Do you mind sharing which BMWs you purchased at near 60% of their MSRP with such low miles?

Thanks!

A 3 series, 5 series sedans and my current X5. I was lucky since it was during COVID. I just have to be patient. I have also gotten good deals on low mileage Porsche Cayenne S and Range Rover Sport…
