It’s amazing, I really thought it was only me who found this “feature” as absolutely ridiculous.

I honestly started hating my 24 760 because of it. I don’t care how smooth it is, I just don’t want it at all. It’s psychological and I don’t need to explain myself. Very happy there is an off button now, but still waiting for a total workaround where I don’t even have to push the off button any more. Hopefully an opportunistic hacker comes up with a workaround.

I got 7/2024.40 update with the engine starter recall service.
I have US 2019 40i so check if your car is also part of the recall, if you want the update.

My car had an issue receiving OTA update constantly so I'm curious to see if this update helps with this issue.

Also I will try to recode my car so will report back on what module is blocked, if any.

I also have a 2019 coded to keep ASS off. I have an appt for a transfer case flush and fill and a starter recall. I also have had 4 updates fail to install but do not want to lose the ability to code ASS. Please let us know if your update has removed this coding option. If it does I will ask my dealer to NOT update my software unless there is a critical safety issue included in the update.

Below is the recall letter and what it involves. My vehicle is part of the recall and I have coded ASS off on my vehicle. I am NOT going to do the update.

I did the update on my 2021 X5 xdrive40i and I don't have the ASS button. Before update I was able to coded the ASS off. Since I did update it can't be coded off. Only way I prevent from turning off is having A/C on.

AFAIK, the starter recall is updating the sw to the latest version- it introduces logic to prevent the starter from excess operation which leads to the overheat and fire.

Not sure you will have a choice. I think if a vehicle is taken into a dealer and there is a recall on it with an available remedy they must fix it. Perhaps there is some type of waiver you can sign taking responsibility. Let us know what they say.

rmorin1249, I expect you can count on losing the ability to code ASS to default off when this update is applied, as BMW removed that capability in a previous update by locking the Engine Control Unit DME (I know, because I lost that capability on my 2019 with that previous update).

Note: While writing this, I visited Bimmercode's site and, curiously, the still list the ability to code ASS on pre-LCI X5's. Some time ago Bimmercode confirmed to me that this capability was lost and my understanding was it could not be reinstated since the DME was now locked. Perhaps they've just not updated the capabilities description on their site.

Related, there is a link on BMW's recalls site to download their owner letter and FAQ - https://www.bmwusa.com/bin/recalls?v...recall=24V-576 - but the file appears to be corrupted as Adobe is unable to open it.

faq is at the end of this doc: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/202...4V576-5346.pdf

SITUATION
BMW AG is conducting a Voluntary Safety Recall (effective July 31, 2024) on certain Model Year 2019 -
2021 BMW vehicles that were produced between November 12, 2017, and May 31, 2020.
If a prior engine starter motor-related mechanical and/or damage issue has already occurred to an affected
vehicle, the engine may become hard to start, or it may not start at all.
Should the vehicle’s operator respond by trying to start the engine repeatedly with excessively long cranking
attempts, this may cause a consequential starter motor electrical overload condition to occur.
If the vehicle’s engine starter motor/oil sump acoustic protection cover material is overly contaminated, for
example by oil, in an extreme case this could lead to a thermal event.
The Recall Notice and Q&A have been attached for further information.
CAUSE
DME software error.
CORRECTION
DME software update that will prevent the engine starter from being overloaded.
PROCEDURE
Determine what is the vehicle’s current I-level by either using AIR or the Aftersales Workplace (AWP)
application and compare the vehicle’s current I-level.

Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.44.2x or higher (released October 12, 2023).

Will do. I sure hope I can code it but if not I'll have to get used to pushing the button after starting the engine like I do in my SL.

Not OTA but the dealer just updated my '24 to 07/2024.40 from 03/2024.33 while it was in for other things. In 07/2024.40 (or an update in between) I can confirm they added ASS disable. It appeared as shortcut icon, haven't gone looking for where else it may be. It is not persistent so you'd have to disable it each ignition cycle. It also included security alarm notifications to your phone thru the mybmw app. I also think they added a few more granular options to some of the driving aids but I'm not 100% this wasn't in a prior update. Probably other changes but i haven't noticed them yet.

B//MWGuy, I also have a 2019 40i (so iDrive 7) and wanted to know if there were any notable changes you've seen with this update.

P.S.
In my post yesterday on this thread I described that Bimmercode's site indicates ASS coding capability for pre-LCI G05's. I emailed them and they confirmed it is not possible, so unchanged since the loss of this capability with a previous iDrive update. Why Bimmercode continues to include this on their capability list is a mystery.

Because many, maybe most, people aren't on a version that restricts the coding of ASS.

I lost my Weather and Clock widgets when I was updated to software version 07/2024.40. When I add them back, they just disappear again a day or two later.

Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Apologies for the delay -- been a bit busy with work lately. I haven't forgotten and will come back to this hopefully end of this week!

I am still on 11/2023 version and I do not have compass or clock widgets either. I'd say this is a BMW Apps snafu or a backend system issue? One other datapoint: I keep getting the enter username and password to log into your profile message frequently, even after I do successfully.

My 2019 X5 is also on a 2023 release and for several months, at least, the 'enter username and password' message is displayed when iDrive switches from my wife's to my profile. I ignore it (by pressing the Home button) and no issue has ensued.
