Nice charger though!
So OTA on my 2019 X5 to 7/2022 has been stuck for about a month or so now. Took it to dealer for routine oil change and showed them OTA stuck. They found the following fault codes which had to be cleared first before OTA could proceed.

Faults 038400 038404 stored for remote upgrade, per test plan D8700_RSU0000_90_214 Programmed Vehicle I-Level 21-07-585 to 22-11-550, remote upgrade performed during programming.

They also changed the key fob battery 66-12-6-912-985 (common 2130 button cell) as it was low so not sure if that had anything to do with the fault codes, probably was coincidental? YMMV.

I just picked up my G05. The problematic fault code mentioned to me was that an attempt was made to install while on an incline.
My driveway is steep but my garage is not. During one day of running errands I put on the brake on the incline and according to SA the car could not overcome that fault code.
They insisted no problems with my battery.

Thanks for info. Yea not sure what my issue is eventually I will go to dealer when it’s due for service and I guess find out.
But with regards to battery when I used CTEK charger according to the charger the battery was below 80%.
So I guess I am just unlucky and have multiple things blocking the update.

FWIW, it's not a great idea to perform the update tucked away in your garage. While the odds of something going wrong once it actually starts is small, if it does, you probably won't be able to start the vehicle, or get it into neutral to pull it out so it can be worked on. Find a flat surface outside, and perform it there.

Mine was updated to 11.2022 by the dealer yesterday.

They said the software update was done at the same time as the DDE control unit safety recall and that could have been causing the issue as to why it wouldn't update.

Same thing for me. Upgrade was stuck for weeks. I tried charging the battery, left the key in the car (garaged of course) with the parking brake set, rebooted I-drive, all without success.

Took it in a couple of days ago for an oil service and asked them to check on it for me. They were able to get it programmed (no charge) to 11/2022.50

This is what the service order said:
39371 Vehicle-end preconditions not fulfilled. Connected battery charger to maintain battery voltage. Performed vehicle test to check faults. Found fault 038400: Vehicle -end preconditions not fulfilled. Per customer request, programmed and coded vehicle to update vehicle I-Level. Performed post programming initializations.

I ran BimmerLink and I also 038400 code. I’ve tried deleting and comes back right away after I shut down the car. Battery is charged with trickle charger and according to BimmerLink is at 84%. I park in garage flat surface.
At this point not sure what the issue is that triggers that code.
I won’t be going to the dealer for service for another few months and I don’t feel like going there just for this software update.
So I guess just gonging to give up on it.

My late 2018 G05 downloaded the update (on my phone) and it's sitting waiting. Nearly 2 weeks now

I also ran BimmerLink and the 038400 code is there.

Car on level ground, handbrake on car has been on my Ctek charger, done a full recondition cycle and a normal cycle the following week.

Went for a 80 mile round trip last week, still nothing.

Battery has been around 85% to 95% when checked.

I am due to go into BMW for a recall in 7 weeks, will update if it needs the dealer to do it.

My BMW came up with a message software time had run out and would not update.

Just had a visit to the dealer for EGR software update.

Told them about the software but updating. When I picked up the car, they said they could not perform a remote software update at the BMW dealer.

Just looked at the software version and it's 03/2023.45 so looks like it was done.

Is this the most upto date software?

It is the most recent major version, minor versions are release all of the time so hard to be current on those.

As an aside assuming you don't have a 45e, keep in mind that the vehicle uses a brake energy regeneration system so the battery is not always being charged when you are driving. The alternator is only engaged when coasting or braking. The exception to that is if the battery is below a specific SOC, I believe 60%, then it will run until it reaches a specific SOC, I believe 80%. Taking a 70 mile highway drive may not charge it anymore than a few miles through town depending on the conditions.

i have 45e, uploaded the upgrade to car without issue, but it never notify me to install

It will only update when all conditions are all conditions are met, but it should offer you the option once you've stopped the vehicle. Earlier in the thread, it lists all of the prerequisites to actually start the upgrade.

Mine asked me to connect my phone, but even when the app said everything was connected, it never uploaded to the vehicle. I eventually had the dealer apply the upgrade after they witnessed the problem.

For whatever reasons, sometimes it works properly, sometimes it doesn't. I've had four updates...two worked as expected, and the dealer had to do two of them after things failed on their own.

I am stuck now with 3/2023.50. The image in the above post - that did not show up in my quotation - is what I see except for the newest numbers.

I am in the middle of a move from OK to TN and apparently will need to put this to a TN dealer next month when we do an oil change.

Yea I gave up on mine. I am out of warranty dealer said it would cost like 300 bucks to do coding to deal with it. I said no thanks. Kind of BS but like I said I gave up because I don’t think there are any meaningful changes anyway.

Unfortunately the dealer will likely do nothing unless they provide some goodwill time or you pay for it. BMW will not reimburse them for their time if the vehicle is running 07/2021 or greater. At that point they consider the vehicle to be up to date.

BMW takes no responsibility for the failure of their tech? As everyone knows, connected drive data online say we get OTA 'as long as technically available'.

What else in my G05 is not being updated properly?

I know the maps had to be done by the dealer last time. I pay for the app to notify me about red light cameras and it has not worked for months? Will I get video from the BMW app should I be an accident?

Mine is stuck on the same.

I was able to update iDrive in the past but this one for some reason is just getting stuck after uploading to the car.

Previous updates also downloaded successfully to my phone and then the car but was pending for so long that they just ended up deleting themselves.

I put the car on a charger earlier this week for 2.5hrs and got the battery up to 90% but still no dice.

Earlier this week I drove from OK to TN. At various stops, I got notice the installation would begin 30 minutes later due to the extreme heat of the engine. Of course, I would not carry on this procedure when parking outside a hotel.
My last night on the road, I got tricked into changing my password for the Connected Drive. Since that time I have not once seen a notice that the installation could begin.
I did see a flashy video today about July 4th, but nothing about this OTA update.

Hi everyone,

I have the same issue with my 2020MY X5 xDrive40i
Since few months I can’t update it on 03/2023.50 and stuck on 11/2022.31
Dealer said car is out of warranty so asking for $450 to perform the update.

Any good advice on this? Like wait for another update?
Still thinking to try to buy a charger and charge the battery. Does anyone has a good picture where the negative terminal located under the hood on g05?

From the manual, though it still stuck for me after charging. Good luck!

Called a dealer today, he said that there is a known bug in current update release and bmw is working to solve it. He suggested to wait few months and a new update should become available which will be easy to install without a need to come to a dealership.

He said even if I want to come to dealership they won’t be able to install it manually.

I put my X5 on the trickle charger (CTEK) over the weekend and didn’t do anything for the install.
