Golf Tee Mod Rocks
Add me to the list of satisfied "customers." Went to a local bicycle shop. They gave me (3) 7/32 ball bearings free of charge. Got home, pulled the tubing off, popped the ball bearing in, sealed it back. 20 seconds.
I'm very satisfied with the sound. It's perfect, as others have attested. I notice it not only when cold, but warmed up as well. Oh, 335 Sedan, btw.

It's for the dual exhaust on a 335i; a 30-sec., "almost" free mod which keeps the exhaust resonator flap open and makes for a slightly deeper, throatier exhaust note. However, it can be accomplished using many small items, including a golf tee, a screw, a ball bearing, etc.; the first one was done with a golf tee, hence then name.

question here. that flap opens with vaccum as soon as the car gets to operating temp and at WOT anyway, so isnt this mod just going to work while the car is cold? i would imagine after that it makes no difference.

There's about a 10% difference in sound (louder, throatier) at a cold start, idle, AND while cruising between 1,500 - 2,500rpm, even if the car is all warmed up.

the valve/flap/whatever opens at far less than WOT. You can hear it opening after shifting (most easily into 2nd) and then putting on a bit of throttle. It is also easy to hear when you start the car. just leave the door open and you'll hear a metallic "clack" as tthe exhaust reaches the valve. It's not the sound of the drivetrain shifting under the power of the engine as my bmw shop foreman tried to tell me. i hate bullshit

I've been going back and forth. I dunno, I like how it sounds when blocked, but I get tired of the volume all the time. I dunno, a Luxury Sports coupe isn't supposed to sound like a freaking droning Subaru WRX and it kind of does a little when blocked off.
When out playing I want to hear it, when simply driving to work, I dont... I need a switch...

Well if you have time to check the muffler bearing and clutch you might as well top off the taillight fluid. Also, if you haven't done it already put summer air in your tires.

I don't really hear much of a difference, so I switched it back to stock.

Or you can just disconnect your vacuum hose. Thats what I did. You can hear you engine rumble at 2k RPM instead of 4k RPM < (That's usaully the stock sound affect). The GoLF Tee mod, is a good one since it's free. I was planning on doing it. but I donno.

I notice a slight difference.... mostly on cold starts and when driving between 2k and 4k RPM. It does drone on the highway just a bit if you're around 2.5k RPM, but it's not too bad.... I like it.

So you don't mind putting Hyundai badges on your car??
Who cares what it is right? As long as it works? Also because it sounds lame to call a BMW car modification that has nothing to do with Golf, or even uses a Golf Tee that. It would be like installing a custom intake and calling it the Baseball Bat Mod. And lastly, when describing it to others (and non BMW owners) it sounds logical and eliminates the obvious next question they would ask, "why the hell do you call it the "Golf Tee Mod"? |
