I’m late to the party, but all I have to say I that:

I rented a FWD turbo Volvo sedan with a chip the owner put in it (didn’t even know you could chip a Volvo) and it was the worst driving experience I’ve ever had. Without exaggerating. It felt like it was gonna fall apart. It felt like the engine was and transmission and frame were sewn together with dental floss. Couldn’t grip the road to save its life.
It probably had 80k miles on it.

Even before these most recent BMW designs, they were already going nuts w overly-exaggerated bodywork in their M models...are they making cars or fighter jets? LOL. Generally-speaking, Volvos, Mazdas, and, heck, even KIA it seems, all have more tasteful designs.

My Volvo also handled like crap, driving it on mountain roads felt just plain dangerous.

I don't like the plastic oil filter housing, but it is easily replaced with a metal one. My Volvo had so many inherent design problems that are impossible to rectify.

I don't know about the latest models but I bought a V8 XC90 in 2007 that I still own. It has never left me stranded but the cost to keep it maintained and on the road over the years is substantial.

I drive it in inclement weather so the M5 can stay in the garage.

Never owned a volvo, never driven a volvo, but based strictly on looks I like their SUVs. When I was shopping for an SUV I considered volvo for about 12 sec then I read about how unreliable they were... so I decided to go the safe route and got the cayenne.

I hope they also replaced the Volvo electrical system with something more reliable, or else you will have more problems.

Correct, OP you ran the car with low oil. They fixed the problem and Volvos are reliable and have amazing rust protection. I had an S70 and 850, and they had minor problems but they were bulletproof overall

Volvos do seats like no one else. Are they as engaging to drive as a BMW, no, the suspension is less sporty but they are fast and comfortable and handle decently

Main reason I bought a XC60 as my new daily. Way more comfortable seats than the X3 or X5

Yes, BMW makes supportive seats but they don’t do comfort well. On long trips I was so comfortable with my Volvo, not so much with the BMW

My Volvo did indeed have comfortable seats. Perfect for sitting while waiting for the tow truck.

It had it's few recalls but I never had big problems on the V70 MY early-2016, great comfort, good features just not as good handling as 5'seriees but at that time it was cheaper than a comparable 5'series. Drove it til it reached 260k km and sold it without troubles in 2022 but got rid of it because with 260k km troubles might be around the corner.

I find it quite the opposite. Only on the last part though.

Support in BMW is better in everyway, especially thigh support if you have long legs like me, seat was a little short on the volvo V70.

What was better on the V70 is the softness compared to the BMW, which I notice on my butt. The legs are better though.

In the end the the BMW sport seats exhaust me less than the volvo did but mileage may vary as not every human-body is the same. (I am quite tall, long legs but relatively short upper body and skinny body/shoulders.)

I have also friends who say that Volvo seats are better but also friends who say nothing beats BMW sport seats. And some say their peugeot seats are the best they ever tried.
