M50i - no exhaust burbles after update?
Has anyone else found their exhaust burbles and pops on down shift are non existent since updating to the latest idrive software? None of my settings have changed in the Engine Sound menu but the burbles on overrun have disappeared even in Sport Individual with everything turned up and the Engine Sound set to “Depending on Driving mode”.

The burbles and pops are almost non existent since 07/2019. I got my m50i with 03/2020 and there were already none on this software. The dealership car had the older software and burbles pops were all there. They did this to all of the models, even like m3, m4. I do not know about the US market but in europe for sure. Your exhaust flaps also do not open immediately anymore when put into sport or sport plus, they do not stay constantly open as well. It is a shame for a v8 car, also a lie from dealerships, during test drive you fell in love and after you get something else...
From which version to which did you do the update? |

Its a European issue/change only to remove the burbling. Apparently there is a new regulation you are being forced to comply with. I do agree with the above misrepresentation. This is like paying big money for a pair of B&W 8 series towers only to have the woofers disconnected.

Just done a hard reset of the idrive and it seems to have resolved it. Back to how it was. Not how a 530bhp V8 should sound but as it was when I collected in June 2020.
Re: European cars and lack of decent sound compared to US models it’s more down to the OPF requirement (environmental regulations). I was lucky that my May 2018 M4 was one of the last to avoid having the filter in the exhaust system. The contrast between mine and a friends Sept 18 is incredible. Didn’t realise they’ve removed burbles from the software mapping too though. That’s insane. |

I recall reading on the F80 forum that some were able to dial it up or down. Can it be coded back in if one wanted it?

That is very interesting Unit, maybe You can help me it then. Mine arrived october 2020. What do You mean by hard resetting Idrive? Did You revert back to the older version? What version are You on now that it is working? In general settings/engine sound menu do you have a sporty option or only reduced, balanced and depending on driving mode? Both of our cars have OPF yours of june and mine from october as well. Please help me out by answering my questions maybe i can get somewhere....

Sorry meant reboot by holding down the volume and restarting it rather than a hard reset.
Yeah same settings per what you described. Albeit after resetting the sound is definitely back to being gruffer than before (sounded almost like comfort after the idrive software update prior to addressing things today). Nowhere near my M4 levels of exhaust note but better than it was. Just wish someone would release an aftermarket exhaust for the M50i or better still a true OEM M performance one. |

The 2021 X5M competition comes with the M sport exhaust, but it has no crackles and pops. The 2021 M5 sedan still has the crackles and pops.
Who is the bonehead at BMW who makes these decisions? Just doesn't seem right. |

I just confirmed from my build that the M50i does come with the M sport exhaust. I am not sure if there is a difference between the M sport and M performance. Is there anyone who can answer that?

M Sport exhaust is like the standard exhaust for the m performance cars like x6 m50i or m340i etc. M Performance exhaust is the upgraded option cannot be configured in Europe anymore when you ar buying a new car. A difference in sound is very noticable.

The only Performance Exhaust made by BMW is for the 6 Cylinder engine, everything else is stock. |

This is interesting, not for my 30D X5, but this may help some of the M5 guys, that have found the same after software update. Can you just tell me exactly how you reset the I Drive, just hold in the volume knob, then restart the car, or somehow restart I Drive ?, would be great to know, cheers buddy, Simon |

Thing is I don't think it's going to totally revert to how it was if they've actually changed the software per the post above to remove burbles. For me it just got rid of a weird glitch after I upgraded the idrive to the current version that seemed to keep the car's throttle and exhaust in Comfort despite me having the car set in Sport Plus. Just been for a drive and the exhaust definitely sounds gruffer but I'm pretty sure the burbles on lift off aren't what they were. |

Still hopeful ACS or another credible aftermarket firm will launch something for the M50i. |

May give this a shot for another slight glitch we have on our car. Seems to keep cutting the sound off from the speakers, indicating we have flicked two fingers at it under gesture control. So we both dare not move now, it case our tunes bog off. I know i can turn gesture off etc. Also, gesture seems to work when it fancies, on trying to move the screen round, when in reverse camera mode. Not too bothered really, but when you say to your pals," hey, watch this", and sweet FA happens, its a bit embarrasing |

So this then means doing the old trick of pulling fuse F203 while, mafia style, lying in the trunk as the missus hits the rev limiter ("- Honey, now!") down the neighborhood street, will not work? Bummer for my bimmer...if the burbles are programmed into the map by a nerdneck like myself then a primitive hardware hack to keep the flaps permanently open will not bring my lost capability to differentiate from the peasants in their Seat Alhamras back. No, I shall now purchase an old 760i, previous owner dictator in Eastern block, then Somali pirate, and then me, a so very dark history culminating when I commission that Japanese guy to weld me an F1-like exhaust that will explode eardrums as I hit the tunnels of Munich.
