50E Question
Hey Everyone,
Slowly brining my wife over from the dark side of Chrysler towards bmw. Hyrbid is the requirement now as she loves electric but has range anxiety as it’s our family trip car too. She currently has a JGC hybrid and has discovered there are quite a few issues with their implementation and crappy cars in general, but she loves the look and will have a hard time ever leaving the brand. Anyways onto the question - jeeps can go into a state called FORM - fuel oil refresh mode - which disables electric and requires you to burn gas and/or oil or even do an oil change I think… Do the 50es require any such thing or have a similar state? Understanding that best practices may suggest burning a tank of gas every x months etc.. but does the car itself force anything? Thanks! |

The answer to question is essentially no. You can run the car on only electric only seemingly indefinitely. The car will not force you to run the internal combustion engine at any particular point, although the maintenance schedule does still require an oil change once per year or every 10,000 miles I believe. You should note that the 50e currently has significant reliability concerns, so you may want to hold off a bit while those are sorted.

Trust me I know first hand driving both frequently. I despise the Chrysler product and their whole approach to service and customer experience, just horrendous. Would be the 4th happiest day of my life if she switches over lol!!

You can use sport mode which is ICE all the time (plus the electric motor) and amazing mileage. I get 15 in town and maybe low 20's on the high way. 0-60 in 3.9 seconds according to C&D, 12.5 quarter, which is not bad for a 5400# sled.

My wife’s desire is to burn as little gas possible and not be forced into it if she goes 3months without using the ICE. The jeep will force this. It’s good to know that bmw does not. Bonus points for bmw and closer to getting my wish of her conversion |

FWIW, the i3 REx would turn its ICE on after a preset amount of time (I think it was about 2-months) if it wasn't activated within that time in normal operation, but the design on the PHEV is much newer. Apparently, it doesn't need that to happen and still be reliable. The i3 REx is a serial hybrid (the engine drives a generator and has no connection to the drivetrain) whereas the X5 PHEV is a parallel hybrid design (where both the EV and ICE can drive the vehicle).

I typically get 20mpg sport mode and 26mpg in highway. And this is 45e, should be 10% less efficient than 50e.

The BMW's hybrid powertrain is notably superior to the Jeep's, and it's not just obvious to the mechanically-inclined.
The engagement of the ICE is far smoother that any passenger should easily be able to detect the difference when compared. About the only time the BMW is rigid on running the ICE is if you to demand more power from the electric motor than it can offer, and the system kicks on the ICE. If the engine is cold, it will keep the ICE running for a period of time (short usually), presumably so oils can come up to temperature. But I've gone a few months using electric only on the 50e. In fact, from April > November, I didn't visit a gas station once, and I was happy about it. |

My wifes drives the 50e to take our youngest to school and to shop locally -- she never uses gas. If you do get one, you will need to invest in a Level 2 charger to get the full benefit. A 110 outlet will take 24 hrs to recharge a depleted battery...a level 2 takes 3 hours. |
