Driver Assist is a must for me
After using DAP on an X6 and now my M850i, I don't think I would ever want to pay big bucks for a vehicle that did not have this feature. As I shop for an X5 to replace my M850, it's like 90% of the dealer inventory doesn't have this optioned which is an instant 'no-deal'. I have to stop myself from even considering an X5 without it because I know I will regret not having it.
I like DAP because (for me) it greatly reduces fatigue when driving. Rob |

I have it. Never use it. BMW. The ultimate driving machine. I like to drive.

Totally agree with you. It is a must have option that greatly reduces fatigue/stress as well as increasing safety. Would never consider a vehicle that didn't have it as I would regret it every time I got into it.

I as well agree. For me it works extremely well. It takes stress and fatigue out and we arrived much more relaxed at our destination.
At one time we had a stop and go on an interstate, but it was one of those where you go to 50 / 60 mph and then to a sudden complete stop. I changed the distance from shorter distance to medium distance and then the car handled the situation extremely well. Yes it leaves a larger gap in front of you and some cars sneak in and some of you may not like it and want to close the gap. But it certainly is safer that way and less stressful. It's most noticeable with my spouse. She enjoys the ride now much more. That alone takes stress out for me :-) And I am in control. I can turn it off any time I want. However for me I use it > 90% of the times even within the city. From all the packages/options I ordered, this to me is the most important one ... |

I have to admit, I was not convinced at first, but tried it and found it to work much better than anticipated. I still pay attention and have the hands on the wheel and can intervene at any time. But I hardly had to do it. |

As to the "ultimate driving machine" perspective, where I use it are not environments conducive to the ultimate driving experience; e.g. highways. I also regularly change the distance control based on traffic. This is where BMW erred in eliminating the distance control buttons on the steering wheel and it's contrary, IMO, to an aspect of BMW's automated and assist systems which have historically used a 'human in the loop' philosophy. |

I don't like it and never use it, don't really trust it especially in Manhattan and the surrounding metro area. Maybe on wide open country roads though....

Depending on your use case. My feeling
- On inter-urban / suburban commute with lots of highway driving with quite a bit of traffic, it is an absolute must; while I like driving in general I hate driving in traffic jams. - In city and local road it is useless for me - On long roadtrip, it is more controversial; While I'd love to take advantage the chance to do some high speed driving my self for most of time; but sometime when the drive is too long and the road is boring or I am just tired, driving assist is a very nice feature to have. (especially with LCI, it handles most highway traffic situation beautifully) |

When I drive home from work (less than 5 miles) I have a specific traffic signal I may sit 5 times. The car stops automatically, resumes automatically, keeps the car in the lane, while I don't have to touch any pedal and only hold the steering wheel lightly ...

My previous 535 had it and I loved it when driving to and back from work in heavy DC traffic. My current 50i doesn't have it - didn't have a choice as this was a CPO and at fair price for options it had. If one drives a lot in heavy traffic then its definitely a fatigue reducer. Lucky for me that I now work 100% remote.

What a PLEASURE using it through the stop and go traffic... To me, driver assistance is exactly what it is, nothing more. |

I'll never have another car without it. I've used for long stretches of highway without issue.

I was curious if the new assisted driving+ functionality was dependent on the new head unit.
From what i can gather its not. It must be its own dedicated ECU. That kind of makes sense really and has a level of redundancy given how flakey the headunit / control display is right now. I tested this by being on a road allowed by assisted driving+ and then rebooted the headunit to see if assisted driving+ would stop working. It didn't and remained happy. Eventually the headunit restarted and there also was no issues with assisted driving+ going forward. |

I used it but with super anxiety...more so that I just stopped using it, thinking if one miscalculation my family and I would get hurt.
I do, however, use the parking assistant al the time, such as auto reverse or follow my preset path, thinking the worst result is just to pay for the damage that's probably capped and insured. |

I drive on back roads all of the time and it works very well on all except the most twisty ones. Was in West Virginia, PA, and other states in the area, last month and used it all on al different road types.

i tested it and the headunit went through an entire reboot cycle and the highway assist + remained functional, working and was not effected by the headunit restarting. If there was a dependency, the highway assist functionality would immediately become unavailable the moment the headunit went down. This is the case, for example when in the instrument cluster, layout views are no longer available when the headunit isn't functional. |
