Just got a 2024 X6 40i!
In an odd twist, I was surprised with a new X6 for Christmas, having never considered or looked at one. I've always bought sensible commuters, here are the cars I've owned:
72 Beetle 92 Eclipse 95 Golf 02 Impreza 04 Protege 10 Mazda3 14 Focus ST with 132k on it Coming from the ST, this thing is like a fighter jet, absolutely bonkers. But because I didn't shop for it, and didn't get the dealer experience, I'm trying to discover wtf this thing is capable of, and what the features are. This one has the: M Sport Professional package Parking Asst package Premium package M Sport Package Pro End of the year was SUPER busy for me, so I haven't actually been able to sit a mess with everything, but random questions: - Breakin is 1200 miles, right? I'm keeping it under 4k, at what point can I hammer? - Does it have autonomous driving capability? - What's the difference between the MSport exhaust and regular? I'd like more sound, does it get much louder under full throttle in sport mode? - What are the details on the harmon kardon system (just curious)? - Anything important I should know? Regardless, I've wanted a BMW since I was a kid, never imagined it'd be something like this! |

Coming out of that list of cars you've owned, you're gonna kill yourself in the X6 First things first, you will absolutely need to become friends with the owners manual, you have four ways to use it....1. In your iDrive menu in the car.....2. It should have come with one in paper form....3. Plug your VIN into BMW's online user manual at https://www.bmwusa.com/owners-manuals.html ....4. Download the pdf for viewing on a puter or other device. Compared to your other cars, this is light years advanced but the user manual will answer your questions, like why can't I find the window roll up crank handles - It can have semi autonomous driving depending on what options/features are on it. - You will probably find the exhaust note to be lame, it's a luxo car, not a Corvette. MSport is just a tad louder but still, in my opinion, quiet - The Harmon Kardon audio system involves subs under the front seats and multiple speakers mounted in the front, rear and center dash. Its much better than the standard basic system but nothing to really write home about if you are an audiophile. Many owners are replacing the speakers and amp and you can search the forum as there are a couple ways to go which are reported to be a significant improvement. - Anything important to know? Sure is, too much to talk about here. Read the manual over and over and over and go through as many topics on the forum as you can, there are a lot of experienced owners here. - Careful with it during the 1,200 mile break in period, you'll have plenty of time after that to thrash it. Welcome to BMW ownership, you are on your way to becoming spoiled and can never return to your roots |

If it is brand new, call the dealer and set up some time with the genius. They will walk you through everything and set the car up the way you want it. I can’t imagine doing this on my own. there’s a wealth videos on YouTube that can help, but I would call the dealer.

dwwStL is absolutely correct. The genius spent about an hour with me and I can’t imagine figuring it out by myself. Congrats.

Congrats. A BMW is something I’ve wanted since I was a kid myself and I was finally able to get a X5 M50i last year and I really felt like a kid again when i got it. The excitement of driving it, even a year later, is still there every single day. I still remember asking for a remote control BMW, back in 1983, for Christmas and after actually getting it, playing with it for months. I actually kept that toy car for over 30 years since it meant so much to me and I told myself I’ll own one when I grow up. It’s great to feel like a kid once in a while.

When you ask "at what point can I hammer" I think you have bought the wrongcar!!!!.

Awesome - and congrats!!!
Took me a year to buy and it still took me a year to figure all of it out! So many hidden hacks (I particularly love the hand gesture to turn the screen off/go dark at night!). Book time with BMW Genius like was suggested. Best few hours you will spend….reading the manual via PDF is a joke IMHO. Enjoy! |

This 40i would smoke every thing on his list of previous vehicles. It also bitch slaps the Asian SUVs that some foolishly try to equate these G05/G06s with. BMWs have always been about performance even in their base models.

Precisely what happened to my wife and I upon buying our first BMW. We both had several cars, brands, types before but when getting behind the wheel of a BMW, and being the spirited drivers we are, we were instantly spoiled.

As an aside, the 22's on this thing are nuts, the rears are SO WIDE, like Lambo Urus wide. I love it, it's just so over the top. |

The Premium Contact 6's are definitely interesting. I've used Extreme Contact Sports before, and they're very good (and a step up from these Premium's as far as performance), it seems like these have self-sealing technology as well as sound dampening technology. Kinda cool. |

Haha, not exactly, but I'll definitely take it and enjoy every second of it. The level of comfort is unreal, and it gets better mileage than my tuned ST (lol 5k lbs and 375hp getting better mileage than 3200lbs and 280hp!).

What a great gift... awesome to be so appreciated. I can only imagine the surprise. Enjoy.
Looks like most of your questions were answered, but I'd echo a trip back to the dealership to have them assist with initial setup... so much tech. It's certainly possible to wade through it yourself but they'll be able to do it in a fraction of the time - I learned a lot in the process. |
