Check engine light
My 2018 x5xdrive40e with 87,000 just threw a check engine light the same day I filled it full with gas. I have only had it a week.
I cleared the light by a method on you tube and it worked. I heard it was not pressing the gas pedal and cycling the ignition but just cycling the ignition was what cleared the light. Anyway, if there is a problem the code should come up again fairly soon I would think. I only drive short distances so should I put some miles on the highway to get the light to back on if it wants to come on. I heard it takes some miles for it to reset. I dont want to take chances but I also dont want to have to pay my indy mechanic to pull the code that it threw. I dont have a big budget for the car and bought it because I knew the previous owner and they really took good care of the car. I am thinking it was some little burp that happened when the gas was topped off. |

FYI…in most states a CEL warning light’s codes can be pulled for free at any automotive store like AutoZone/Advanced Auto/O’Reilly’s/Pep Boys/NAPA/ etc.
The CEL (check engine light) became a federal requirement in the US under the OBD II mandate in 1996…all car manufacturers had to comply with the same standard for auto emissions, and retrieval of the code. So a generic code reader should give you a 5 digit DTC (diagnostic trouble code) to reveal what sensor set the fault. If you have an old OBD II reader…that can also retrieve the code if you hook it up to your OBD port in the driver’s footwell. Once you have the 5 digit DTC code, you can simply google (BMW OBD II “PXXXX” {where x= the DTC code nbrs})…or you can use the BMW fault code site which gives info for the 5 digit generic or the 6 digit (BMW hex) codes: https://bmwfault.codes/
