winter setup dilemma

Hey guys - Can’t figure out what to do…took delivery of my G05 in late December (21” summer tires) and sold my F15 (and threw in my 20” winter tires). Placed an order for 748M winter wheel setup, which was supposed to be delivered about 12 days ago. BMW says it will be another month or so. Don’t want to run summers for the next 6-8 weeks (even tho we’re in Maryland…it’s still cold and I might need to make a few road trips). Weighing my options:

1. Order a wheel/tire set thru tire rack…not really a huge fan of the 20” O.Z. (which is all they have in stock for immediate delivery — it has a machine lip which I don’t really love).
2. Order a set of 21” tires (goal with this vehicle was to have a dedicated set of winter wheels/tires…and feel like they’re stupidly expensive).
3. The dealership has the 748M wheels but with the Grabber AT3 tires - could just run these instead of dedicated winter tires (this is prob the easiest solution…and if I end up hating the tires can just replace them)
4. Wait another month for the 748M winter setup, at which point I’ll only need them for a few weeks. But I’ll have the setup I want and won’t have to worry about it next year.

Why don't you phone up your SA and ask him if he knows or any of his colleagues know of a spare set anyone was getting rid of. Ordered the M50i with the 22s/Summers, was going to get the Winter Wheel/Tire setup but my SA had a customer looking to get rid of the 20 M Spoke star bi-color that came standard on the M50i with the All Season run flats. Had 300 miles on them, paid $2k for them

faced the exact dilemma down here in Virginia with my 45e I took delivery in December. I didn't know/understand the whole bimmer staggered thing, but now that I do, it doesn't fit my use case or convenience, so I just switched to aftermarket flow forged 20" rims and all season tires (square setup).

Looking around for aftermarket wheels and can't find a lot that I like. What did you end up going with?

Purchase dedicated winter tires and throw them on the wheels you have now. Buy a new set for Spring, Summer and Autumn. Done.

I wanted forged Beyern, but they don't clear M sport brake calipers. my merchant recommended Rohana. they have forged as well, but i went with flow forged.

This is what i would do as well. For the summer you could take 22"-s from HRE catalogue

Solid idea. I should have thrown in the caveats. I have 21s now, and ideally wanted 20s for the snows. As much as I'd like 22s, I also have the third row with air suspension...I haven't dug in to the reasons, but on the configurator opting for the 22s takes away the 3rd row.

unfortunately you're past the point of ideal and now at the point of convenience.
if it is any consolation i have used 21 and 22 in winter and with proper dedicated tires they work well for their size/width.

In the same boat except on 22". Was contemplating running all-seasons year round, but they haven't been in stock so to be safe I've barely driven the new ride while I decide. Wife is annoyed I finally decide and got a replacement for my f85, but not driving it 😂.

Yeah none of the wheels I like are in stock...I was late to the party. My 748Ms with winter tires was further delayed, so I ended up picking up the 748Ms with the grabber AT3s off the showroom floor. We'll see how the grabbers are...worst case scenario, I run them for the rest of this winter and then swap them out next year.

Just be careful with those in the snow. In general reviews are good for an all-retain tire, but I've seen mixed reviews for them handling snow. They don't have a lot of siping and depending on the type of snow it may get packed into the treads, people have also reported worse than expected braking performance in the snow.

I have the Grabber AT3 in 20 for the winter and 22 summer. Ive found the grabbers to be no noisier than the conti 22 which was a surprise. In most snow conditions they are fine. Also get comments about how rugged they look. Makes the x5 look like proper off road vehicle!!

Thanks Pro55. Not overly concerned about the noise...just want decent snow performance. Googled the forums and saw your earlier posts...seemed like you were pretty happy with them.

I actually negotiated a winter/touring set of wheels and tires into the sale of my X7M50i. Knowing I have to drive from PA to Florida in the winter. Basically if you’re in the north east and have a staggered wheel set up you might as well factor in about $3k on top of the new vehicle if you plan to use it in the cold months. It’s just the way it is with a luxury/muscle SUV. Small consolation is you will get more miles spread out between two sets of wheels so you will not have to buy tires as soon.

Is this true for all Beyern options? I used their vehicle configuration tool and was looking at black 20" Autobahns for my xLine 45e, but my understanding is that because I added the tow package the brakes change to 4 piston bembos on the front, similar to the M Sport brakes, so want to ensure these rims would actually fit.

I was looking specifically at Beyern Ritz 20", which will clear standard front calipers, but not M Sport/upgraded calipers (for tow package). Don't know about the other styles, but an honest dealer will let you know
