Would never pay that for a Hyundai. My Genesis Coupe was a POS.

I think they are adopting the luxury car price tag before they adopt the luxury car reputation in order to fit in.

Sad.. but true..Koreans love to copy..

Just look at Samsung phone, tablets and laptop lineup.

The Samsung Galaxy 2 and tablets..they looks exactly like iOS. That is why they are banned to sell in some countries. Don't even get me started on the Macbook wannabes..

Saw one today, and they are borderline hidious. Most recent Hyundai designs are, imo, winners, but this thing is trying too hard.

totally agree, becoming a luxury brand takes time and hyundai doesnt want to take the time. they design something that looks like a mercedes and put a mercedes price tag on it but its still a shitty car that everyone has known hyundai to make. but props for the company trying to turn itself around

Their touchwiz interface does carry similarities with iOS, yet their devices are pretty different, hence the repeal of bans in most countries. The whole case was a mess.

Can't really use the Galaxy S II in this comparison. That device makes mincemeat out of any mobile phone today including the iPhone 4 and most probably the next iPhone. If the Hyundai was as superior to its competitors as the Galaxy S II is to its competitors, then it would be a different ballgame. As of now though, I know that Mercedes' quality in their luxury line still outdoes Hyundai's by a large margin..

Many people compare the design of the buick lacross to this car...funny, though as the equus was released before the buick (in the korean market).

This car starts at 58K, no options, as everything is included. 64.5K for the fully loaded reclining seat model.

I question how many of those who dismiss this car as another knockoff have actually spent time behind the wheel. It's a hell of a cruiser.

This.

I haven't driven it yet but have been inside one. It's a heck of a lot of car for $30K less than the cars it's trying to emulate.

Hyundai still has a long way to go to sway Tier 1 buyers. I think they're stealing tons of domestic and Tier 2 buyers (Acura, Infiniti, Lincoln, etc) but not significantly impacting the big boys....yet.

I spent a week in the new Genesis and found the same issues. Great "bang for the buck" but wouldn't choose one over a 5 series or E class because of the "deal".

+1000.

Hyundai needs time. And for the money, this car is great for a customer who doesn't care about status and needs only top class comfort. If this car remains on the market, I bet people will change their opinion about it to a very positive way.

I don't care what these "independent" reviews state. If you spend anytime in these hyundais you can definitely notice the cheap materials used. My buddies has been bragging about his ML audio for a while now, that was until his car decided to stop outputting audio of any kind.

I sat in one and for a Korean car it was very impressive. This is all that I can say...

Then I saw the price tag say $66K and I said thank you very much. It's easy to put a high price tag on a car and make everything look nice but making something "cool" or "valuable" in the eyes of others is priceless. Then making everything flow together and feel "right" just as Benz / BMW / Lexus do is something that takes years of time and not a reproduction of a competitors car.

This car will be a failure; that is an absolute guarantee because no one in their right mind will buy this car when there are other luxury marques available as alternatives. Volkswagen made the Phaeteon and it sold like 1000 cars in the US.

The Genesis brand should have been made as a seperate brand with prices in the 50K range... After years and years of developing a great US dealer network, reliability and proper luxury car brand image, it would take off. This however does not happen overnight.

Hyundai should stay with making economy cars and midsize vehicles - they do this excellent; the new Sonata and Elantra are excellent cars when compared to their competition - Honda and Toyota. The Equus is dump when compared to an S class / 7 series of Lexus LS.

I just went to Hyundaiusa.com They start at 58,000 and they're 65,400 fully optioned. Not that I would pay that much for a Hyundai, however that is not "starts at 70k"

Funny you mention the LS - I heard the same thing when Honda and Toyota started trying for the luxury market. In fact, your comment about branding gives a clue to the Equus' real isue - it's still a Hyundai.

Toyota and Honda created the Lexus and Acura brands for the US market because research showed we were such brand snobs that we would balk at paying a premium for Hondas and Toyotas, no matter how nice or well-made; the cars were still sold as Hondas and Toyotas in most other markets, where buyers were more sophisticated. So what are we hearing now? "Seventy grand for a Hyundai?" We can't differentiate between a Equus and an Accent.

Reviews have shown that the car is actually a pretty good value - the luxury isn't as comprehensive as it needs to be, more surface than substance, but nicer than most brands will give you for the same money. Edmund's Insideline team sure seems to like theirs.
