I believe Ms have a break-in oil change and it is a scheduled maintenance. I don't know if this is because of tighter tolerances or some other reason but I suspect this preventative maintenance is worth the cost for bmw. They even change drivetrain fluids too.

This may further the debate unless you have a bmw engineer explain why for only Ms and not others.

Regardless you will hear stories of people not changing oil in years to those that change it with increase frequently beyond that bmw recommends, each have their good and bad stories.

It's a choice.

1200 Mile Running-In Service
Maintenance work:
All models: Change the engine oil and oil filter.
For the recommended oil for your BMW
vehicle, please refer to the Owner's Manual.
Change the fluid in the rear axle differential.
M5 and M6: Manual transmission: Change the
transmission fluid and clean the oil filter. NOTE: This does not apply to the M-DCT Drivelogic transmission.
M3 and M4: Check the turbocharger
intercooler system reservoir. Top up if needed.

I am just hitting 5K and it is going to be hard for me to wait until 10k. Just not in my DNA to go that long without an oil change. Just feels wrong...

Just picked up a new 50i m sport and it's a dealer stock. So the service indicator shows that I should be get first service in December 2019, but I doubt I will even have 3000 miles at that time. Should the 1year/10k miles be calculated from production date or delivery date? Thanks in advance.

I ALWAYS do my own oil changes, even when it is free from the dealership. I don't care how "good" of a dealership it is, they have clowns working there that will skip the filter, skip the oil, or just skip the entire process, and say they did it. Or, even worse, they do sloppy work, leave a mess, leave a leaky filter... the list is endless.

Most dealerships have AT BEST 2 qualified mechanics.... and everyone else are just high school dropouts trained to do very basic tasks, which very rarely ever get checked by the 2 qualified mechanics they have on staff. In short, if they "can" short-change you or cheat you, they will.

I've had 2 mechanics fired on the spot, and will do it again when I catch them screwing over customers. I don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

Regarding interval - BMW recommends 10k miles, but after the 1500 mile break-in, I will do it anyway. Then, I will wait the 10k miles, but that is assuming:

1. It was normal driving conditions (no trips to the track or off-road adventures)

2. I use Royal Purple.

Many years ago, I built a mid 2000s STI that I frequently raced at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. 20-minute GRUELING lap battles, around a 2-3 mile track.... full-force.... 160+ mph..... for 20 minutes straight... several times in 1 day.

Mobil1 smelled like a tire that had been set on fire.

Royal Purple?? Not only did it still look "purple", it still smelled like it was brand new.

I've sworn by it since that day, and have used it for every oil change I've ever done, on every car, and I will continue to. I don't care what it costs. After I personally witnessed the difference.... it's worth the $$$.

Just my opinion.

Still have my 2011 328 and followed the 15,000 mile oil changes since day one. Currently have 184,000 miles on it and the engine runs like a champ. No valve sludge either. All oil changes were performed by my dealer. I was extremely skeptical since I keep my cars for 10 years. Since the X5 is down to 10,000 I will probably follow that as well for the next 10 years.
