Custom Order Build Locked at Status 111 / Public Service Announcement

I have a 2020 X5 M50i on order currently sitting at status 111.

I attempted to switch a few options last week with my dealer (wheels, interior trim and add night vision).

The dealer specified that the build was locked but they did not understand why.

After doing some research, I learned that BMW locks order with "individual" options. These cars cannot be edited once the order is placed. Historically, this has applied to "true" individual cars with custom colors.

However, after inspecting the ordering guide, certain options as follows are apparently classified as "individual" even though they are plainly presented in the ordering guide. As such, these options have the potential to lockout your build from day 1, so be careful:

1.) Extended merino leather
2.) Full merino leather
3.) All of the interior trims with an upcharge

Additionally, through VIN decoding, I've noticed that BMW might also be classifying the extended shadowline trim as "individual."

My dealer has attempted to reach out to "regional" people to get my order fixed, but so far no luck. Has anybody run into this before and/or does anybody know who I can tell my dealer to contact?

At the time of placing my order, I was told by the dealer that I could make edits up until production begins, so this is a big issue for me.

And you let it go, or did the dealer make an effort to fix it?

Well this is good to know. I was considering changing an option or two, but since I have the same IND as you do, I won't bother my dealer about it. None of the options were deal breakers or anything so looks like I'm sticking with what I got haha!

Man, you guys are too easy. Dealers need to be held accountable for not understanding the ins and outs of the BMW ordering system. If the build is going to be locked, the customer should be informed as such.

BMW has the duty to ensure dealership staff are trained appropriately, as well. These cars are $100K+. There are very few people on this planet that can afford a car of that caliber, and BMW needs to respect this fact with better customer service.

Well, I did put my order in Aug 7th and was told I wouldn't get my VIN until the end of September. When I asked why it was almost 2 months away, she mentioned because of all the individual options so I kind of had an idea. The only pain in the ass about this process is that BMW NA cannot track my vehicle and the website wont accept the production number because it's "invalid." BMW NA just said they couldn't track Military/Diplomatic vehicles for some reason...even though its a US spec vehicle

I changed my m50i successfully to delete 2 axle air and add DHP. It has extended merino.

Which dealer? I do think there may be a difference between full and extended. The factory produces extended all day long but they seem to do the full merino only one week out of the month. I don't understand what is so difficult about the full leather.

Gebhardt in Boulder. Note that my production week is week 39, identified elsewhere as an "individual" production week.

What do you mean by "individual production week"? I also have a car with a few individual options but slotted for week 41.

Interesting - that is my dealer too. It seems that the full merino leather is the cause of my problems. My M50i is also set for week 39.
