kick open trunk
Maybe everyone else knows but you can not only kick open the trunk, but you can also kick it closed too! Very handy. I just figured this out today after many grocery store trips.

Yep. Worked the same in my Q7, and one of the reasons I didn't get a "just in case" trailer hitch since I'm not planning on towing, and like the convenience.

We found that this function did not operate 90% of the time so we opted for the factory tow hitch pkg. We have lived without the kick to open option on five previous X5s so we will continue to do such. Plus the G05 is the first X5 to be offered with a factory hitch option.

It's weird because here in the UK, I have the comfort package so I have the kick-open/close gesture, but on my car, I also have the foldable tow hitch, and it's all working perfectly. I never tried the gesture with the hitch deployed of course (like the OP, it's a 'just in case' option) but with it closed, it works just fine...

It does not work if the engine is on, or if side door is open, or key is in the car. It even does not work when all the conditions are fulfilled about 50% of the times. What’s in the engineer’s mind when designing it?

It wouldn't surprise me if it didn't open when the driver's door is open. When the driver's door is the first one unlocked by comfort access none of the other doors will open until they are unlocked from inside the car. So it would make sense that the hatch didn't unlock too. The driver's door unlocked first preventing the other doors from being unlocked is a safety thing so when you unlock your car no-one can jump into the passenger side. |

On the G05 X5, in Europe, your towing package is the electric "ball" structure and that retains kick to open. In US, the towing package is a "female receiver" structure and that suppressed kick to open.

What I found out today: it is possible to open the rear trunk while driving. Happened as I was reversing out of a parking spot and my wife accidentally pressed the button on the key remote. Pretty sure I was not at a stand-still, but may have to repeat to make sure. Embarrassing then, but makes you wonder what it would be like when doing 250 km/h down the Autobahn.
Find it hard to believe there is not a line of code in there saying "if (speed > 0) then doNotOpenGoddamTrunk". |
