The best perfomance tires already loses grip below 6-4 degrees celsius. There are two type of winter tires, for western europe and for northern europe. Northern europe tires performe better with very low temperatures but these tires are softer and in summer they do not performe very well. Western Europe tires are harder and better in summer but do not have very good traction in low temperatures.

I recommend winter tyres. AS is just bad at everything and the only ones pushing this is car manufacturers and rental companies needing to cut costs. To get a grip on cold roads you need natural rubber. To get lots of miles you ned plastic. Plastic in cold climate gets really hard and will be like skates. AS tyres tries to be an avarage of that. If you own a BMW x5 and paid that kind of money buy the real thing. X5 is a heavy car...

depends on where you live. Here temperatures only get to -9C (15F) and UHP AS tires work fine in my experience so it's dependent on where you live

Uhoh, this is 1st time I've heard that the 22's aren't as smooth. I was hoping the nonRF would help (none of my local dealers at the time had 22 in stock). Tried to talk my wife into the 20's but she didn't like how the 20's and 21's looked. We also didn't get the Air suspension so we might be in for a rodeo/bronco ride...!

22” wheel and tires for me they are good and smooth on the very clean road such as highway, on the local road , here where i live , is quite bumpy and lot of hole on the road surface which have to becareful. I just feel 20” wheel set make me more relax when driving especially on lot of snow here but i will switch back to 22” in Spring. Ofcourse Non- runflat tyres will help it smoother.

We have between +10 and - 10 in the winter in southern Sweden similar to what you have. I have been testning tyres for several years and the answer is better than summer tyres. Never even close to winter tyres. The day AS tyres are good as winter tyres winter tyres will not exist.

We don't get snow, winter tires only really help with ice/snow, otherwise my former Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+ and Pirelli P Zero AS+ both performed very well in cold weather

I agree that nothing beats a good set of dedicated winter tires in snow or ice but many of us live in areas that see only a few days each year with snow or ice on the roads. Schools and businesses usually close when this occurs, like today we are getting snow and everything is shut down. Spending $2500 - $3000 on a set of dedicated winter tires and wheels doesn't make sense IMHO. If I lived in Watertown or Syracuse, NY I would feel different.

I am the perfect example of why AS are optimum. I had to drive 1100 miles down the east coast. Winter tires in the south would have been horrible. I hit snow and ice on the return and the AS tires worked excellent. Never one issue with hydroplane or lack of grip in partially covered snowy roads. I left in -5 degree temps and was 85 degrees in Florida.

Let's see, what the reaction to this will be!
On my F15 I have been running Grabber AT3 all-terrain tyres for the past 3 years, first set still on. Planning the same on the new G05, even BMW here in Germany has released a wheel set in 20" with 275/45R20s, this is the only tyre on the market with M&S and snowflake logo (insurance purposes met).

Guys do you know if I can get all seasons for my 22 inch M wheels? I currently have the standard performance summer but plan on taking my SUV up to the mountains this upcoming winter and need to throw on all seasons or winter tires. Any suggestions?

21" P Zero AS have worked great for me on my Q7, even in our Midwest winters; can't imagine that Quattro is that much better than X-Drive. Not RF tho'...

they don't make any in the needed sizes of 275/40R21 and 315/35R21 for the P Zero AS

My bad - 21" 285/40 Scorpions on the Q, AS, not staggered. Was an option to replace the Summer Performance OEM - definitely not an alternative here about 6 months out of the year. Have worked great, but the X5s will have 20" RF. Several considerations: easier to find, cheaper to replace, better ride.

AS Scorpions are available for the X5 but they're not even in question. I won't use terrible tires with only an A reaction rating vs AA especially on my 50i where I can break traction with my P Zeros without much work. A AA (heat/traction) ie UHP tires are needed if you actually care about driving the X5 in even a mildly sport manner.

To qualify, Scorpion Zeros - derived from P Zero - not Verde, and there are many who wouldn't exactly qualify them as terrible performance tires. And a Q7 isn't exactly a performance vehicle. My avatar has such a beast, that I drove from Munich to Verona and back last month, so I know the difference. But I get your point.
