Late Oil Change is this bad?

Hi guys,

Bit of an update from my last thread. Bought a 2019 M240i the other day with incredibile spec and in mint condition, the servicing was all logged in iDrive and 'on time' not 'late'. But after further inspection (my own mistake) it appears the engine oil was changed at 3k miles but then it wasn't changed again until it hit 36k miles.

It did do a lot of miles in it's first year (24k) and has dropped down to 6-8k a year since. It was a pre reg and BMW courtesy car for it's first year from the documentation I have. Which is why it did 24k miles in it's first year.

The BMW servicing documentation I have and iDrive did not log the engine oil being done at 36k as late or an issue which is very strange. I have contacted BMW to verify this. Should I be concerned? The car is at 46k miles currently, and did have another oil change at 45k recently. I don't plan on keeping it for 10 years, but do want to keep it for 5. Just hope it hasn't damaged the engine. It drives like a dream, thanks to the B58. Just wanted to know your thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance.

This sort of damage won't show up for years. No way I'd own that car though. lol

Get rid of it before 80K.

I don't think there is a true way of knowing unless you take the engine apart and examine everything. Sending the oil to a lab to check for bearing material is probably a waste as the 33k engine oil has since been changed.
So long as it hasn't run low on oil, then seeing as its a brand new engine i would hazard a guess that whilst there could potentially be some wear, everything maybe OK. personally i'd be more concerned about it being a courtesy car and being redlined from cold by people who don't have to worry about maintaining it.

That is definitely a very long time! My guess is there was at least one change after the 3,000 miles during those 24k miles. It would be exceedingly unlikely a dealer would run a courtesy car that many miles without changing the oil. The odds of that happening are virtually nil.

Having said that I’ll tell a little story. I worked for a BMW dealer once upon a time and we had a little old lady return her X3 at the end of her lease with 36,000 miles and it had one oil change during her lease at 18,000 miles. For some reason that’s when her CBS system told her to get the oil changed. Because of this BMWNA required us to pull the valve cover and send them photos of the internals of the motor before they would agree to let us CPO the car. I got to look inside the motor. It was pristine!! It looked like it was brand new!! Not the slightest hint of wear or sludge anywhere to be seen. That really increased my confidence in the durability of fully synthetic oil.

Thanks for the info, what I can't understand is why the service for the oil wasn't deemed as 'late' in iDrive or on the documents I have. Very strange.

Skipping that long between oil changes isn’t great....it can wear out the engine faster.

Are you saying there was no oil change between 24k miles and 36k miles or 24k miles and 46k miles?

Synthetic oils can provide protection and last > 10k-15k miles. BMW free-maintenance OCI is at least 10k miles which means it can still go well past 10k without issue. If the oil had significant breakdown by 10k then they’d be charging the oil much sooner. For street driven miles, I go 8k miles before changing the oil and the Blackstone report shows the oil has not lost any of its protection abilities so the oil could be used for an even longer mile interval for the OCI. Your engine is fine. However, one thing you don’t know is how the car was driven before being fully warmed up. Most engine damage is done during a cold start and the warm up period. You could use a borescope to look inside the cylinders to see if there’s any piston scoring but it’ll probably look fine. Do you have to add any oil between oil changes? If yes, how much over what mileage? Things you can’t see are rod and main bearings but fortunately the b58 doesn’t have a rod bearing issue like the s65 NA 4.0 L V8.

Thanks for your insight man, really appreciate it. I've only just got the car so I don't quite know yet if it drinks oil or not. I spoke to the used car dealer today and he said, BMW normally say to change the oil every 20k miles but the car often adjusts the intervals depending on how it's driven.

So it had an oil change at 3500 miles, it had another service at 27k miles but the BMW service states it didn't need oil for another 8000 miles, so then it didn't have the oil change until 36k miles. But the BMW iDrive didn't deem the oil change as 'late' when it did get done at 36k, which I find rather odd. So in all, its had a oil change done at 3500 miles, 36k and 45k. I'm just hoping it hasn't damaged the engine at all.

I'll be honest, I really don't know what I'm looking at, but I do have a local BMW specialist which might be worth contacting.

I’m a bit surprised by the dealer not changing the oil at least once per year (applies to any car that didn’t reach a BMW OCI within one year). We have several cars so we never put more than 5-6k miles per year so on our e92 M3s and f82, we’ve always taken advantage of the BMW free-maintenance once/year oil change. Out of warranty we do 8k mile OCI or once per year if we don’t reach 8k miles. We use Red Line motor oils in all of our cars, including the f22 m240ix. The g20 just received its last BMW free once/year oil change. Next oil change, it too will get Red Line motor oil.

Sounds like your b58 is running strong so just enjoy driving and learning its limits without worrying about the past 46k miles. The f22 m240i/m240ix is a blast to drive and eventually you’ll stop worrying about what was/wasn’t done for the first 46k miles!

I change my own oil every other season or every 4k miles. I just don't trust this task to someone else, im paranoid, I guess. Point is my car looks like it never had an oil change but in reality, I change it all the time. Maybe this is the case? I know a lot of people that do their own oil.

Edit, nowadays i put maybe 2k miles on the car a year... just realized i never go anywhere anymore bc of WFH... weirdo

No one can say how much damage happened. I'm sure it's not optimal and the only way forward is to do oil changes on time and see what happens . THat said, I would be pissed at the dealer who sold me the car that's for sure.

At least it's not like running the engine with no oil.

Thanks man, I do love the car. And will take care of it that's for sure. Is there anything simple I can do to check if any damage has been done? I'm going to book a health check in with my BMW specialist for peace of mind.

That is a good point, I guess there is no way of telling. It wouldn't surprise me if the owner actually worked at BMW, as it's strange how the iDrive didn't pickup the late oil service at 36k miles. It's possible that it was being done, but he didn't bother to add it to the iDrive. Then again, if I worked at BMW and owned the car, surely you would put it into the iDrive so it has a history of oil services.

This is not going to result in anything IMO. All they going to do is plug their scan tool and see no codes and look at your idle and assume all is good. No one can check the condition of your engine apart from disassembling it and looking at the metal pieces.

The only thing that may remotely do anything is oil analysis (Like Blackstone) but that is debatable as well depending on the meterials used.

Could it also have been changed but the change not recorded? Seems odd a BMW dealer would not follow the once a year minimum.

and this

As I said in my previous post, the odds a BMW dealer that used this car as a courtesy car for one year and 24,000 miles only did one oil change at 3,000 miles and then not again for 21,000 miles are zero for all intents and purposes regardless of whatever documentation the OP has in his possession.

A few things that can be done...

Change the oil, and send a sample to Blackstone Labs for analysis. It'll tell you if there's some wear going on.

Then get some engine oil flush to remove any sludge, yes, that means dropping the oil again. Then you change the oil again in say 2k miles.

Then just maybe change oil at 5k mile intervals with synthetic and call it a day. Nothing you can do about it now. It's all yours!

Good luck!

I've known two car owners who bought new cars and just didn't comprehend the whole maintenance thing. They drove and drove their vehicles (both Hondas) and eventually when they started using oil, they would add it but never change it. The oil filters surely started bypassing at some point. Eventually both engines seized up, coincidentally (or not) in both cases it was right around 55,000 miles. Neither case involved synthetic oil.

Both were really into horses. If there's a connection there I don't know what it is.

Guys, OP is in the UK. In the UK there is no once a year minimum for oil changes, all the cars are on CBS so depending on usage you're looking at anything up to 20000 mile recommended intervals.

Don’t worry. Send a sample to Blackstone at the next oil change. Enjoy the car.

You already bought the car, just keep up on oil changes yourself.
