What are you using for radar detection?
I’ve read some stuff about lane detection hardware giving some detectors fits, so I thought I’d ask what the current best prospects on the market are.

In my experience radar detectors with added laser detection are worthless against a LIDAR (laser) gun. In my state Illinois there is still primary usage of older radar based technology. In some of the surrounding states WI, OH, MI they are user LIDAR and the guns are so fast that having a detector is worthless. If you get a laser notification and you're speeding it's too late to make a speed adjustment to avoid a traffic stop and possible ticket. Depending on where you drive, highway or city and the technology the local law enforcement uses a better defense is to set your cruise control to stay below 10 over or consider making a substantial investment in a laser shifting system. Currently laser shifters are legal in 38 states, the exceptions being California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and the District of Columbia. I'm no angel, but after looking at the costs and considering the potential consequences, seems like I'm better off planning my trips using Google maps to allow enough travel time to get to where I need to be without exceeding 10 over the posted highway speed limit, it's less stressful too. I use a combination of staying under 10 MPH over the limit and the Waze app. Oddly I tend to use cruise control as the "floor limit" so I don't drive under that speed and set the speed warning at 85 to not exceed that limit. I find Virginia state police are reasonable vs say Maryland.

I use an older Passport, and was hoping the hardware technology has taken a leap forward, like battery power or bluetooth, but sounds like its just a re-hash of the same gear. |

Uniden R3 here, hardwired to the mirror. Car is loaded and generally no interference from the vehicle gadgets except I THINK the gesture control might be having an effect from to time...oh, and Hondas / Acuras

This is not a new topic here and previous threads are easy to find like this one:
https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...ighlight=radar I run both a V1 and R7, but disable laser which is unfortunate because the V1 is good to pick up lidar scatter. On the open road I drive PSL +20 and up. There is a new radar detector system that will change the industry. Among the good threads at RDF is this one along with YouTube videos by Vortex: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?threads/93685/

Where did you tap in for power for the ALP and detector?

Where is your controller Interface box located? I am going to install my rear radar antenna and route to the front to connect to control box module. Not sure where to install the module box. Front drivers side in footwell or passenger side footwell where the front fuse box is located. Need access for updates as well. I will need to decide where to mount the rear antenna on the right side or left side behind bumper. I will mount antenna on right side if I go to the passenger side and left side if I go to the drivers side. I just don't want to run out of wire length if I mount on wrong side where controller box is located. Thanks.

I use an Escort Max 360C on a blend mount when I’m going on “long” trips. In Bay Area driving, detectors aren’t terribly useful unless you get out into the burbs. That said, they have saved my bacon before. The CHP uses LIDAR, but KA is much more common in my experience. K band is almost always bunk or those slow down speed signs, so I mostly ignore it. Nevada uses a lot of old crap, so you sometimes will get hit on K there...have heard they even have X/Y in some towns.
Finally, I try to keep it no more than +20 and keep alert for laser hideouts. Most of the time that is not difficult given traffic. Sometimes in an open country highway that turbo 8 just begs you to go faster though. |
