The Vernasca leather used in the X5 is much different than the one used in the X3. When I traded my M40i in on the X5 I was pleasantly surprised at the feel of the Vernasca in it. I'm wondering if they have two different suppliers for them. The X3 definitely got shafted in comparison.
I stopped by the dealer yesterday to pick up some docs. While I was waiting, I checked out one of the X5s on the floor. it had Vernesca...it was very nice!

I upgraded to the Merino leather. If you can afford it do it. Makes the car look and feel a lot classier. I went with Ivory white. If you get the MSPORT package the $1000 is a deal considering it cost 3x the price in some of the other BWMs.

Out looking at cars today for my Gal at Germain BMW here in North Naples and looked at the Merino leather closely. Should have gone that route for only another grand, not the end of the world but certainly a higher quality.
Stopped by the Porsche dealer also and checked out the Boxster Spyder 4.0L N/A with the Alcantara center sections on the seat base and back, damn nice to sit on and looks extremely cool. Wish my M50i had that combination.

You better be careful. It is a slippery slope and before you know it, you will be wishing you had soft-close doors and heated/cooled cupholders.

That interior looks fantastic. I love the way black leather looks. I had it on my last car, but decided on a change for my X5.

I have the same floormats. they're working out pretty well.
Thanks. Coffee merino is also a great choice. I may go that route on my next one. Yeah the factory rubber floor mats worked out really well.

I considered the Merino (soooo soft) when ordering my 2019, but was concerned that it wouldn't hold up over time. Unexpectedly, when it came in I ended up leasing (my first lease ever) instead of buying, so long term concerns became moot. Had I intended to lease from the start I would have probably gone with the Merino.

Well, in 15 months I'll have the chance to correct that error.

The X3 leather seemed cheaper but it could have been me not use to the X3 interior compared to the X5.
No, you're right. The X3 is noticeably worse. That said, I still think the Vernasca in the X5 is still unacceptable in a luxury brand. Merino was an absolute must for us (particularly coming from the X3).
Even the fake stuff in our Model 3 is much softer and it replaced a Lexus with semi-aniline leather which is absolute luxury (even better than the Merino).

Merino is a step up from the Vernasca no question about it but to describe Vernasca as unacceptable is ridiculous. I have the Vernasca and can tell you that it is not any where near "unacceptable".

Your opinion of Vernasca vs Merino is the same way I view your opinion of HUD vs no HUD

Merino is totally worth the extra $1,000. While most likely not worth the $850 they charge to extend the leather to the dashboard and tops of the door cards it really makes the cabin feel special.

I'm hoping for return of full Merino leather option for G05/06.

After having the Merino for a month or so, I would have gone for the full-leather option, if it were available, and I knew then what I know now. Quite honestly, as some have already said, the Merino should be standard at this price point/segment.

Garage List
For a car approaching the near end of $100k fully optioned, adding an option for full (almost) leather coverage for the interior should be, you would think, a no-brainer for a luxury car manufacturer. Glad we got it for 2020.

I'm going for a ride in my M50i with it's "unacceptable" Vernasca leather while some here figure who has the most luxurious interior, heard the prize is a pair of mens silk pajamas. LOL.

Better than Porsche

Last week, I sat in the 18 way Adaptive sport seats in a new Porsche Cayenne GTS. The Merino seats in the X5 are definitely smoother, softer, and they just plain smell better.

As a side note, the V8 in that GTS sounded amazing but didn't feel all that much faster than a 40i X5.

Absolutely...couldn't agree more. Merino is significantly nicer.

I just got delivery of my Vernasca leather X5 45e. it is fine, but clearly very generic quality. I really hope the durability is there because Merino look and feel SOOOO much nicer. But again I am not the kind of guy willing to take care of leather so Vernasca is good for me.

Carbon fiber even better, doesn't have the shiny plastic look.

I picked up my 2021 X5 M50i last week, I’m very happy I went with Merino leather, it is a huge improvement over the base leather in my 2019 X3 I traded in.
