Radar Warning Light
I was driving on interstate yesterday and got a symbol in the middle of the dash and a "Warning Radar Ahead 1,500 ft" wording.
I assume it gets information from Waze or something but surprised me when it came on. |

Spencer518 is correct. That comes from the Traffic Camera app that notifies you of traffic cameras and radar.

all of the alerts it gives me are completely wrong, does anyone have a source for how it works outside of fixed cameras?

I'm not sure where it comes from but I'm pretty confident it is picking up radar gun signals. There's a Highway Patrol Office right off the I5 freeway close to where I live. Sometimes when I drive that section of I5 I get the "Radar Warning 1500 feet" message. I suspect when I get this message they are calibrating there Radar Guns before they hit the road to catch speeders. It doesn't happen all the time but it's always in the same spot by the HP office. |

Edit: Here is an article from Forbes. It uses some type of database as well as a radar detector network, whatever that is. "Powered by Here Technologies and Cedar Electronics, it’s similar to a function already being offered as part of the Waze traffic information system. Only rather than rely on reports of speed detection devices submitted by other motorists as Waze does, BMW’s system is based on a nationwide database of installations backed up by a network of radar detectors." https://www.forbes.com/sites/jimgorz...h=16e56e825b7a

I do not know the availability of it. Check on your ConnectedDrive account to see if it is an option for you.

mine goes on where there are absolutely 0 police or people sometimes so I'm not sure. I'd love to see some days on how it works because there doesn't seem to be anything outside of the fixed ones they can program

I just installed this app. We don't have red light cameras in my state, but if it saves me one ticket, it is well worth the $25.

It has to be supplemented with readings from something because the officers doing the readings are always in a different location. Probably in conjunction with the ACC system or similar.

Few times I got the same sign flashed in the instrument cluster when I am on specific streets. For me, it's coming from the complimentary subscription of "Traffic Camera Information Trial". I am in Houston too, and I have noticed that it does not even come if I drive near those stationary speed monitors. It's two places specifically where I have seen this come up so far.

It is and it does:
"Fixed and Mobile" meaning it is detecting in real time more than just data supplied to it but presented to it while it is moving. Eg: Radar Detector. I get two different symbols when mine goes off. One is a camera the other is a radar gun.

No, it does not detect radar real time. I posted an article explaining how it works and what data sources it uses. It may be in this thread but if not I will check for it later and repost.

The BMW does not have a radar detector (really no more than a radio with a signal meter and directional antenna(s)) but is able to leverage the data from those that do. Nothing illegal about it and more akin to Waze's user reporting feature.
