Question 12v/Cigarette Lighter Fuse location

can anyone help me with the location of the 12v socket/cigarette lighter fuse location? it doesn't seem to be at the fuse box in the cargo area on the right side, so there must be another one

someone broke my phone car charger and it seems that it blew the fuse, the outlets in the cup holder and behind the front center console stopped working. the one in the cargo area seems to be working fine

Thanks in advance

I have a right hand drive vehicle, and there is a fuse box in the footwell on the right hand side. It is easy to access but it seems a tight fit to remove fuses. the fuse bix in the rear cargo area had the identification tables for all of the fuses in the vehicle from memory.

from other posts on here I think the box is in the right footwell regardless if it is right or left hand drive.

not sure where the cig 12v fuse is. i know thr usb ones are in the rear as that is what i hard wired my dash cam to.

good luck.

Hard to say because you gave us NO vehicle information. What model/model year do you have? Different engine/models may have different fuse layout...so you need to find your laminated fuse index sheet.

Do you have the laminated sheet that lists all the fuses and their location? If it's like my recent BMW...it was found folded into a slot in the rear fuse box location.

The little icon for the cig lighter fuses should be printed on or around your cig lighters...look for that same icon on your sheet.

Example below is from a 2011 X5...the cig lighter icon is in the 5th column/bottom row...look for that icon on your sheet...or again, take a look at your cig lighter and look for that icon on your fuse sheet. And the 2nd pic below shows how the laminated fuse index is folded into a slot in the rear fuse box.

You can also use the online TIS. If you have the G05 X5 40i (that's the model I used to search the TIS database)...you can see in the wiring diagram that the 12 volt sockets are powered through 3 fuses. One up front (F46), and two in the rear (F218 & F273). If this site is new to you...the following link is "interactive" in that you can scroll left/right/up/down and can increase/decrease the size...and the fuse numbers that are BLUE are clickable links that will provide additional information: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...sav/1VncvSrfBj

Hi

I have the exact issue you have. How many fuses did you replace and is there a spare fuse?

Thanks

You're looking for fuse "F46" which is in the front right footwell up behind the glove box and blocked by the footwell kick-panel and the edge of the carpet... Apparently BMW doesn't think owners should be accessing these fuses else why not make an access door? Here is a step by step DIY for replacing the cigarette lighter fuse:

You will find a fuse panel layout diagram tucked in at the top of the fuse box in the trunk (right hand side) as well as a fuse puller

Size: 92.6 KB

Next remove the trim panel under the glovebox by twisting two plastic tabs and pulling the panel down and away from the firewall
Name: IMG_1147.jpg
Views: 14552
Size: 52.8 KB

Unplug the footwell courtesy light and pop the wire harness retaining clip and set the panel aside

Next, remove the center doorsill trim piece with the BMW logo, held by four trim panel clips

Size: 101.5 KB
Name: IMG_1139.jpg

This will expose a rivet fastener with a torx screw holding the edge of the kick panel. Remove the fastener and pull the kick panel away from the wheel well towards the center console (it's held by two trim panel clips)

Now you can pull back the edge of the carpet away from the wheel well to gain access to the first row of fuses in the fuse panel mounted upside down. "F46" is a 20A yellow fuse closest to the blue relay "R1"

Hope this helps.

Damn. My new car as is exactly. The same the cup holder and center console are out and the cargo area works. Pretty bad for just getting the car.

This guide might help decoding the symbols on the card folded up in the fuse panel. https://www.servicetutorials.com/202...ols-explained/

There are three fuses for the 12vdc sockets: F46, F218, F273
https://www.bmw.cc/en/topics/offers-.../fusecard.html and put in your VIN, and you can download a .PDF of the fuse layouts.
This is the one for my 45e.

Note, there's a difference between a cigarette lighter socket and a 12vdc accessory socket...the BMW has 12vdc accessory sockets.

OK, so my 45e is only a month old. I find that my forward 12v outlet doesn't work either (never did). I downloaded the fuse details for my car & all 3 are fine.

One oddity though! F273 does NOT have a receptacle (even though my diagram says there should be one there). A fuse can't be put into F273. Anyone else run into this?

It is likely the adapter you are using, many do not work with the way BMW designed it. Try some others and see if they work for you. You can also take it to your dealer and they will switch out the outlet for you.

The same adapter works fine in the other 12v slots though. I will try it though!

That is correct, the front is different than the others. There are a few threads on this.

Gotcha. BTW, I did just try a different adapter just now it also does not work in the front, but does in the back. Perhaps manually expanding the contacts will work? Thanks.

The problem is actually that it is not making contact on the bottom. Here is the applicable SIB.

Is there a problem with the car's electrical circuit design that's causing fuse failures, or are you guys just heavy smokers?

not really helpful, but why not just use the USB plugs (by cupholders or in front armrest or on back of front seats) to charge devices?

First off, there's a difference between a cigarette lighter socket and a 12vdc accessory socket even though they may look identical. The BMWs today only have accessory sockets. As a result, there are two slightly different socket designs and a device designed to fit a cigarette lighter socket is too large in diameter, and as a result, the center, hot contact point is not made. The front socket in the BMW is slightly different than those in the rear, so some plugs might fit the rear, but not the front. BMW will change out the front socket to one that should work for you based on the SIB noted.

If you have a multimeter, you can verify if you have 12vdc by putting one lead on the center button at the bottom of the socket, and the other on the metal sides. The vehicle controls don't keep them powered all of the time, so you need to make sure the vehicle is 'awake' to get a measurement. It could be a fuse, or just that the plug doesn't fit and make contact with the hot contact at the bottom.

This is our tech world today, constantly changing but if you think its bad what BMW did, just take a look at all the connector types Apple has forced on us over the years, I have a freaken drawer full of antiquated connections types.

Anyway, when I got my X5 I took my existing 12v charging adapters and plugged them in to the rear cargo area receptacle, then the rear seat receptacle and finally the one up front near the cup holders. They all fit and worked in the cargo area but none worked in the other two as already mentioned in this topic. So I bout two of these, they fit and work in all three and give me both old world USB and new world USB-C. I didn't want BMW taking my car apart for what I deemed an owner fix and I needed the USB-C anyway. They work great.

I see mine are currently unavailable but there are a plethora of similar adapters - choose your favorite

.

FWIW, it took about 15-minutes for them to pop out the old socket and get the new one in place...it's not major surgery. Some of that time was doing the paperwork.
