I can confirm that the wiring harness is available from BMW Canada. I have the harness in hand.
I'll share more as I work through the installation of the controller and harness.

Thank you Shawzy44 for keeping us posted. Unfortunately I am out of luck and won't be able to use the harness because BMW removed 8SL pre-wiring on 2021 X5/6 40i models (unless of course you order the hitch from factory). My SA double checked with BMW Canada and I also had another dealership verify this. I ordered my X5 40i with DHP and BMW's system won't allow me to order the hitch from the factory - hard factory restriction. :

Aftermarket solutions like Stealth hitch with OEM parts (harness+controller) won't work anymore with X5/6 40i models.

Edit: I'll still install the Stealth hitch for our bikes until another solution emerges, but for now I won't be able to take advantage of the trailer functions on the iDrive.

I am taking delivery of a 2021 x5 40i tomorrow. It does not have an OEM trailer hitch. I intend to get a Stealth hitch installed and it will only be used to mount a bike rack.

The reason I chose the Stealth hitch was because it’s *invisible” but I am concerned when I read about installation requiring cut outs in the bumper. Is this only required if you are installing the wiring harness?

I would appreciate if someone could put my mind at rest.

I have the wiring harness and module from bmw that I bought this week. I also bought the stealth hitch which arrived Wednesday. Just need to have installed.

I’m just curious how the harness will get routed from the rear passenger side compartment to the outside. I found this red port thingy but only the wiring harness cable would fit through that hole, not with it assembled. I also had to buy a pollak connector socket from Amazon to plug into the wiring harness.

I believe only the wiring goes through the grommet and the controller stays on/near the fuse panel. Other end is the POLLAK.

Many of us with a Stealth Hitch install will really only use it for carrying bikes but would also like to have the iDrive Trailer Mode available to us so that the sensors on the back and sides of the car are set to "stop annoying me" mode.

Mjbmw1 would you happen to know if installing the controller without the external harness would achieve this please? I know it seems a waste, but I'd be super happy with this setup for the short term until I can get the external harness installed too.

I believe, but not 100% there is a spot to mount or clip in the control module to the fuse box/Canbus board. Should be a white control module holder area below the fuse bank.

There is a spot in the rear compartment that the module clips into. I opened it up to take a look and tested it. Found where the ground bolt is for the wiring harness as well

@Mikester6 Can you snap a pic or is it obvious?

TO answer a couple of questions:
- just having the module installed will not automatically enable trailer mode...the thing that does is having that, the rest of the harness, and actually plugging something into the trailer's electrical connection. In Europe, many people active it by using a lighted bar since bikes tend to cover up the vehicle's and it's required to use the harness to get the aux lights to work
- the factory, or OEM hitch has a cutout on the rear of the bumper (inside NA anyway)...the Stealth hitch structure is entirely behind the stock bumper cover, but to get to attach either the square receiver we use to mount a bike rack, or a ball to actually pull a trailer, those go up into that structure behind the bumper cover, and to get to that to make a connection, yes, you must cut a hole in the bottom of the bumper cover. It's in a black plastic area, but behind it is shiney aluminum heat shield, so if you're down low enough, you can see that, even if you don't have either the receiver or the ball installed. To remove those attachments and make it Stealthy, you reach up through that hole, unlock the keyed pin, then turn a locking handle, and the thing (should) drop out into your hand. I had the predecessor of that on my GT, and that opening did allow some dirt and moisture to get in behind. I could have gone that way with my X5, but decided that the cost and convenience of having it OEM overcame any appearance issue. You can't see it while driving!

Attached are two pictures. The circled module is the bmw towing module. That’s where I placed it. Locks in nicely.

The second photo is the bmw harness and the pollak connector plug I bought from Amazon.

is that the OEM BMW cargo liner? Is it rubber or plastic like the Weathertech liner?

Mikester,

Does the pollack connector fit the mounting bracket supplied by StealthHitch?. Do the mounting holes on the pollack line up? I bought the Pollack mounting bracket just in case the Stealth doesn't. I also bought a universal mounting bracket for the connector from Princess Auto, but the holes do not line up. Left is Pollack bracket right is universal.

Yes, came with the vehicle when I bought it. It’s plastic

Oh wow, Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I planned on using stealth hitch mounting bracket but it’s exactly like the bracket on your right. It doesn’t fit my pollack connector. Looks like I can’t use anything from the stealth hitch wiring harness kit. Where did you get the left mounting bracket from? I assume that’ll fit my pollack connector.

Did you buy the whole kit with wiring from Stealth? I am hoping this pollack bracket fits with the stealth hardware and "L" bracket that gets attached to the hitch block bracket. It should since the rear holes where the bracket is bent at 90 degree angle on the pollack bracket and the universal do line up.

Mikester,

How long did it take to get the hitch delivered? How did they ship it (UPS,FedEx)? Did you have to pay additional duty and HST to Canada?

Thanks. This looks like the universal one from stealth hitch. Yes, I bought the whole kit. Guess I could use that "L" bracket at minimum. If you contact Steve from Stealth Hitch, he'll provide you a contact to create a custom order so you can order the hitch without the harness.

I believe it took around 5 business days. It shipped with UPS and there was an additional $281 duty fee.

I think I asked this before, but is there any provision in the harness up in the cabin for an electric trailer brake controller? I know that there are some wireless ones that don't require any wiring mods in the vehicle, but having a wired one might have some advantages. Still trying to decide if I want to buy a travel trailer, and that would become a necessity.

@Mikester6 Where did you ground the ground wire? And lastly, did you find a path to feed the harness through any grommet holes in the body and out under the bumper?

I installed the harness and module. I got a Chassis stabilization check control alert. Anyone else get this? Will it clear itself or should I be concerned?
