Hybrid vs. Adaptive Drive Modes
What are the differences between Hybrid and Adaptive? The only difference I see is that Adaptive seems to have stronger regenerative braking. When I take my foot off the accelerator in Hybrid it coasts freely, in Adaptive it slows and the battery is charged. Both seem to take navigation into account for deciding to use electric or ICE. And both use comfort for steering and suspension.

I called BMW Genius and asked about differences between the 2 modes. Other than the regenerative braking difference, the genius said that in Adaptive the transmission will shift based on your current driving style. He said when driving more aggressively, the transmission will downshift earlier and hold gears longer before up-shifting. When driving moderately the transmission will shift the same in both modes. Steering and suspension are the same for either mode. He confirmed that both modes will use the navigation system to decide when to use electric vs. ICE.
Hybrid = smooth coasting (closing in on vehicles in front will cause regenerative braking) and non-sport transmission shifting Adaptive = regenerative braking and possibly more aggressive shifting, depending on the current driving style. He said Adaptive does not learn your driving style. So it will not change based on driver profiles. |
