BMW Marks end of Quad-Turbo Diesel B57S engine w/ X5 and X7 M50d Final Edition models
I'm more interested in seeing more of the bi-color interior, LOL.
https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/07/30/b...final-edition/ The Final Edition versions will be available in Eastern and Central European countries starting this summer. The world’s only quad-turbocharged diesel engine is going out of production. While impressive in terms of performance, the quad-turbo B57S engine was too complicated and too expensive to keep running and abiding the legislation regarding harmful emissions. Therefore, this September, the B57S engine will be retired after a solid career on board some of the most efficient 400 HP cars. The B57S engine was used by BMW on a variety of models, from the 5 Series to the biggest, baddest SUV they have – the X7. It powered each one of them without any issue. Furthermore, it was actually my preferred mill even on the X7 as it offered a perfect blend of speed and efficiency. Introduced for the first time in 2016, on the 750d model, the quad-turbo diesel mill turned the limousine into a proper land rocket with an incredible autonomy that was really close to the 1,000 km mark. With the launch of the new X5 and X7 models, the M50d badge also made an appearance on their tailgates, marking them as hosts of the B57S powerplant. The X5 M50d could accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill in just 5.2 seconds thanks to the 400 HP delivered by the engine. The X7 took just 0.2 seconds more. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end and, as the B57S is going out of production this September. Therefore, we’re bound to see some special editions featuring it offered around the world. The BMW X5 M50d and X7 M50d Final Edition models will be equipped with a wide array of features as well as a special ‘Final Edition’ inscription on the door sills. These cars will come with things like Laserlight headlamps as standard along with Crafted Clarity inserts inside, comfort seats, gesture control and autonomous driving assistants included in the package.

For those of us in the U.S. this makes no difference. However, as a lover of the diesel powertrain, it's a unfortunate. If this diesel was sold in the U.S. my M50 would have a d on the end instead of an i.

It doesn't surprise me the quad-turbo is on the way out.
The standard 30d with its single-turbo is so under-engineered, all they need to do is some tuning re-maps and they can lift it from 195kW (265HP) to 240kW (322HP) without any serious effort. Some guys on the Forum's here have done the aftermarket tune or external plug-in tune on the 30d and have got some awesome results - so I think BMW have just woken up to this and will do it themselves. If anyone wants more than 240kW/322HP, then go to a Petrol/Hybrid 40i/50i. For me, my next model will be a Hydrogen Fuel cell - assuming BMW stick to their plans. My current 30d gets over 1,100km on a tank and sorry I cant stand this niggling crap about counting and being worried about sub 100 kilometres on a battery charge. |

I can easily have 460hp and 880Nm with 400€ investment. U have to compare stock vs stock. There is a huge difference. 30d is set up for economic driving and to not struggle with the weight. 50d was set up for performance. I just took a long trip with mine M50d I did 1900km in 15h30min temperature set to 21°C, an average of 122km/h and I spent 210€ in Diesel with an full loaded X5. All this reaching multiple times 200km/h and I did France (from switzerland to Spain) always over 160km/h. So I'm very very satisfied with performance and economy of this engine. Sad to see this engine go away, just thinking they may bring some solution like the 40d mild hybrid. Till then, goodbye M50d. |

Here in Australia, the 50d demands an additional $20k (AUD) and to be frank I dont thing that's worth 1s in acceleration performance (is that HUGE?), nor the extra premium I'd be paying in fuel AND Insurance every year. It will be interesting to see what happens to re-sale value now for the 50d, discontinued lines usually don't favour resale values. |

I will still buy an M50d over an 30d. I still think best value performance choice is the 40d. I don't know there but I think in Europe the resell price for the M50d could raise now... |

Very sad news on the 50d, the BMW 3.0l straight 6 diesel is 'THE' best diesel engine on the planet, regardless of how many turbos it has and ive had them all and every one made me smile!
Well done BMW, From my first 330d E46 to my G05, thanks you crazy Germans |

I think is has less to do with the reasons listed..... and more to do with a growing number of European cities placing restrictions on diesel vehicles.

Sad because no one cares about the environment of the recycling of an electric car battery. It only matters the emissions now not the result long term. |

This makes me so happy. Joining you in M50d land next Saturday. Can’t wait.
Would you tune the engine while under warrantee to get the extra horses? Which supplier would you use? |

I prefer to look to the future, and like I said before my next car will be Hydrogen fuel cell, assuming BMW delivers on what it has promised. Hyundai are doing it with the Nexo, Toyota with the Mirai, and BMW are in partnership with Toyota on HFCEVs, so when the largest car make in the world gets behind something, chances are it will happen.
