Going up a bit on the profile, problem ?

So finding decent A/S tires for the 21" wheels that are coming on my X5 is going nowhere but if I add 5 to the profile of both the front and back (275/45 21 & 315/40 21) I get a lot more options, would this affect the car in any way other the the speedo being off a tad ? The winters here don't really call for a dedicated winter tire but I also don't want to chance it with the 3 season Pirelli's that it's coming with. Should I get the A/S in the + size or just do a dedicated Vredestein Wintrac Pro (my only option) in the OE size ?

Thanks

Possible issues,

1. Front tires rub on a full lock.
2. Transfer case damage due to oversize tire.

Even if the transfer case wasn't damaged because of the oversize tire, if it has issues, BMW will point back to the oversize tires.

I was in the same predicament for the past several weeks. I just bought a winter wheel set with a square set up rather than mess with changing out tires twice a year. After 4-5 years, you'll essentially break even based on tires swaps (at a dealership), maybe. All depends on how long you think you'll keep the car...

Just another option for you to think about...

Vrederstein makes good tires. They are made in the Netherlands, and quite popular here in Europe. I have a set myself and they are fantastic.

They are NOT Chinese tires.

Nothing to be afraid of.

I know their good tires, my problem with getting a winter specific set is that we don't have a lot of snow so a decent A/S tire would probably be a better choice but the size and staggered setup of these wheels leaves very few options

Ahh... I see. I misread your post.

Regarding going up +5 in profile:

Technically, going up (or down) in profile isn't going to hurt the vehicle at all. The IMPORTANT part, is that you maintain a close overall diameter between the front and rear tires.

(Your car will LOOK differently though, so be prepared for it. The visual trickery that will happen, is that your car will look like you put smaller wheels on it.)

if you have a 275/40 and a 315/35 that are EXACTLY the same diameter, going up to a 275/45 and 315/40 will yield slight differences.

(40% of 275 is different than 35% of 315) 0.2" inches, or 0.7% difference. Perfectly fine.

Not much of a difference at all. Nothing to be concerned with with those specific tires. Our cars are rear-biased and designed to have a degree of slip. But.... again, the goal is to keep the overall rolling diameter as close to "perfectly equal" as possible. I run a 335/25 in the back, and a 295/30 in the front.... which are exactly .4" inches different fron one another, or a 1.4% difference. I'm ok with that. The difference is minor enough that it's not going to cause issues. The equivilent, would be running 10psi lower pressures in the rear. Not significant enough to worry about.

I like this website, because it will not only give you differences in tires.... but it will also make suggestions for other tire sizes that are similar:

No problem.

The other option.... is to buy a slightly used set of all-seasons in the OEM sizes.

if it's only winter tires... who cares? This is EXACTLY what I did for my stock 21s. No regrets.

I did look at that as an option but am a bit leery of eBay tires, it's a gamble of what condition, age, etc your going to get

You're right. There is always a risk. Perhaps I was lucky, but I bought a set of 4, that were all over 90%.... and used them for 6 months without issue until I bought my new wheels & tires. They are in my garage now, and ready to be re-installed any time I need them (Germany has laws requiring them in the winter, so that will likely be the next time I install them.)

... That includes 150mph+ bursts on the autobahn. I've had zero problems with mine.

I mean... if you aren't happy with the condition, you can always return them. That was my rationale anyhow.

It's just another option.

This is another good website for tire size, and wheel size, comparison with technical data and recommendations. I used it to make sure my square set up wouldn't jack anything up.

Also, here's a story about somebody that already did it. I forgot about this. Still a bit sketch to me, but it works for him.

I don't think it's sketchy at all. Those tire sizes are quite reasonable.

His 21" wheels however... now "visually" look like they are 19s
