Tire dealer will not sell non RFT tires for X5

Hi all,
just had a strange buying experience. A tire deale who I have used in the past for my Mercedes refused to sell me non RFT tires for a X5 I own.I took the RFT ones off soon after I bought it several years ago and replaced them with Michelins, then Hankooks. Those are worn and when I called they said they could not do it for "liability reasons"

here is part of the reply when I complained to them.I tol them I had both a spare and jack but they did not budge.

" when it comes to BMW vehicles, the owner's manual and the sticker on the drivers side door jam says to use BMW APPROVED TIRES ONLY, and the only approved tires have a 5 point star stamped into the sidewall. As far as we know, there are no homologated non run flat tires that have this marking. By changing out the run flat tires for non run flats also takes away your ability to get to safety if you have a flat tire, meaning you will be stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. If we installed the non run flats, the liability comes when you get a flat and you are stuck on the side of the road waiting for roadside assistance. If something happened to you or your wife, while stuck on the side of the road, we could be sued for disabling the run flat tire system and making it so you could not drive to a safer location to wait. "

Has anyone ever run into this ?

That's ridiculous! My 2020 X5 CAME WITH non-RFT. I put non-RFT on my F15 also. So much for personal choice in NH I guess!!! Find another tire shop.

I can't imagine there is a way that a person could win that lawsuit against a tire shop. It could be filed, but not won.

Thanks Spike5150,

thats what I thought,I was really taken back by it as its a big tire company with 3 or 4 locations. And like you I said in my reply that I would like to see an example of a lawsuit for not having RFT and getting stuck, doubtful anyone would win it !.
thanks

Go to a different tire dealer and tell them to get bent.

Ask them about their liability when you're stuck on the side of the road waiting for a tow-truck WITH RFTs ... which is what happened to me with factory 2000km RFT that did not live up to anywhere near to the 100km flat range for a tiny road puncture. I have a spare now, that was a fight in Canada.

Idiots. As already said, go somewhere else.

When I called to order the tires and talked with the tire sales guy he said, his boss will not allow him to sell non RFT tires to car that came with them when new.
Claimed that BMW was sued for that and loss, well I looked up and all I could find was a class action that they lost because of the problems with the RFT 's !
I emailed the main office now thinking the sales guy was mistaken and that when the sale manager emailed me back.
He did not reply when I said well if thats the concern-being stuck on side of road,I have a spare and jack-no one ever asked.

I really was shocked, ordered a set of non RFT's(Hankook) from a competitor and will be driving right by the other dealer with my money they could have had Thursday to have them installed !

Costco Tire guy gave me quite a bit of hassle for trying to order non-RFT tires for my X3. I pointed out that BMW (and many other car co) come with roadside assistance and I have AAA (roadside assistance co). Finally did it but I did think it odd I got so much resistance.
