Navigation update

I was just looking at setting on my navigation and it says I have update/maps Europe 2018-4
My idrive update is 11/2019.70
My old TomTom used to do at least 4 map updates a year and yet my BMW says 2018-4????
Surely this should have updated a number of times or are OTA updates not working? How can I check what is the lates map update??

That map update is not OTA.

You have to download it on you computer and put it on a USB stick (> 32 gb free space, 32 just not enough) . The car will recognize the map update once you plug it in and start downloading.

Your regional (Europe) map version is 2018-4, but your local maps (GB and IE - which are the ones that update OTA) are showing to be on 2020-2. Looks like it is working as designed.

I was just looking at the BMW connected site and saw the following:
"With Navigation Map Updates, your BMW’s Navigation System will get the latest maps updated automatically over-the-air. Available subscription periods may differ by model."

That might a nauw functionality wit the idrive upgrade? Do you have a MY 21?

I have MY 2020 and the general European map update is with USB except local maps updates.

I think that for OP it would also be like this because his map version is 2018.

I have a MY20 Build date 4/2020. When I go to connecteddrive.bmwusa.com, I was able to get the above info. So far there has been no downloads for maps or updates.

A typical full map update for the iDrive 4 on the F15 is 30GB. I highly doubt we will get a full map update OTA. If one can find the map files, they are very easy to install via USB. On iD4 you had to generate a new FSC code (basically a license specific to the new map version) which was also hacked into a DIY process. I assume we won't need that with ID7, but don't know for sure.

It just constantly updates in the background on the G05 with no user intervention needed.

I've not done anything with my maps since purchase (05/19) and am on 2020-2

RSU has nothing to do with map updates btw

That is strange. Mine only updates local maps OTA but not the general European map. I need to update it my self with a USB stick after downloading it on a computer.

It doesn't notify me I have to update my maps. I had to initiate it my self.

Maybe a different version or setting? Country differences?

I think we might be talking at cross-purposes as I was replying in context of the OP.

Yes the full euro map won't be OTA, but the local ones are (GB/IE) . That should suffice for 99% of cases and I guess that's what I assumed was being discussed. Apologies if I've missed something but you used to have to use an FSC or code to upgrade the local maps on the F15, which is not the case now - it simply updated automatically.

Did you actually find and install by USB an updated version of the FULL REGIONAL MAP in the GO5? If so, did it need an FSC code?

A picture paints a thousand words

No FSC needed for either

Yes twice. The general European map.

It is not difficult.

Download the map download manager. Log in with your account. It will show if an update is available and download it to your PC.

Then insert a 64 gb USB stick (the map is 32,3 gb &#128077 it will put it on the stick

Put the stick in the USB port of your car. It will detect automatically and ask if you want to update your map to the version on the stick.

It starts downloading the new map that takes 15-20 minutes while driving but you can still use navigation.

I didn't need a code but I was logged in on my account.

Thanks for the picture - unfortunately in the US Connected Drive portal, Manual update is not listed as an option. Only have the ability to select local update area. Bummer.
