My 2019 G05 30D X5 M Sport has just failed to extend/retract although it will still rise and fall under control. Tried to get 2 dealers to check if there was a general technical brief from BMW central covering this issue and perhaps some user applied fix to try but both said they would need to see the car first before they could do anything. Booked in for a check!

My late 2018 X5 G05 in and out stopped working at 1 Year old, approx 15000 miles, the steering column was replaced. It has just gone again at 20000 miles.
It's still under warranty but I'm worried this is going to be a yearly problem. They said it was a £1800 part and probably fitting on top. I assumed the steering column fault was an issue that was fixed with the replacement. Does anybody know if this next new steering column will last longer than a year. When these parts fail, you hope that they look at them and modify the parts. I'm hoping that my first replacement was the same part number as the original. Any thoughts? I own my car and tend to keep them for around 10 years. That's a lot of steering columns every 10,000 miles. It's not a problem on a lease, everything is warranty and then you get rid of the problem. S |

This stops the steering wheel going in and up every time you get out. So stops the wear and tear on the motor etc. Not a good option if different people drive the car. I was going to see if this is an option, it might not work if the fuse is used for other components in the car. S |

There is a TSB on this. Happens on days over 122 degrees in the cabin

I don't think I know someone or owned a BMW who's power steering column didn't fail.
BMW must be sourcing these motors from a very cheap place. Its a known BMW thing...bad power steering column and bad power trunks. |

Hopefully this helps others who's BMW's are cooking in the heat. Read the TSB link I posted above. |

Or, if the fuse solution doesn't work because of other connections from that fuse, is there a means of coding it off? No one else drives mine and I do not need it out of the way to get in and out - I'd like it off regardless. Thanks in advance |

Also, the power tailgate motors failed on my last 2 BMWs before my G05. I am 100% confident in my statement that BMW uses a shitty motor supplier for these 2. |

Your problem is not the same as the one we are having that is well described in the TSB link I posted. Our steering columns work fine all the time except when it gets hot. there is no chatter. Matter of fact if it was not hot out there would be no issues. Your issue might be a bad motor. Not disputing that for YOUR case. It just is not what we are experiencing which is a heat-related issue that tells the motor control unit to not even attempt to move at all. I'll dispute your bad motors claim in general for BMW. I've owned BMW M2 Comp, M3, M5, two X5M's including the GO5, a G05 X5 M50i, two 3 series and two non M X5's. Total bad motors on steering wheel or trunks is ZERO. Your mileage may vary as they say |

Guys, regardless of why it breaks down, is there anything we can do to stop it from moving? Fuse pull? Coding??
I have disabled (usually via car function to do so) on every one of these I have ever had across all manufacturer's. They all break at one time or the other. There has got to be a way....... |

Sorry to revive this old thread. Does anyone know what it costs to replace the steering column and/or motor control unit? The electric steering column on my 2019 X5 is making funny noises and failed to auto-adjust when starting the car today.

Comfort Entry Steering Wheel FIXED
Almost every time I got in my 2019 BMW X5 G05, the comfort entry steering wheel adjustment would not work properly. It would only come down a small amount, then stop. Very annoying! I figured it may just need to have the worm gear lubricated, and I was right! It's been 2 weeks with no no issues! I was able to use some electric razor lubricant (although there might be a better option, DO NOT use WD40 though). It's hard to reach the worm gear and associated lever (right side of last photo). I ended up using a cut bendy straw, filled it with the lubricant, then maneuvered it in place and dropped on the worm gear and lever. Problem solved for a few bucks and 10 minutes.

I probably should've clarified... On my 2019 G05 X5, the worm gear and lever on the right side control the UP/DOWN, the worm gear on the left side controls the IN/OUT telescopic adjustment. I only lubricated the one on the right because that was my only issue.

The plastic piece is just a spring-loaded cover plate which moves up and down with the steering wheel. If you put your steering wheel all the way down (or at least partially down) you can simply lift up on the cover and have relatively easy access to the worm gears. I put a rolled up wash cloth under the cover plate to hold it up while I applied the lubricant.
