iDrive constantly crashing (2024 x5)

My iDrive crashes about 25% of time I use the car. It seems to happen when my wife and I are both in the car and I try to use CarPlay. Sometimes it shows my wife’s phone as paired and I try to switch to mine and the whole systems crashes and rebooted. My dash gets reverted to a different display as well. Sometimes on restart it works fine other times I’ll try to ou with CarPlay again and it will crash.

It always gives a message that Bluetooth is disabled when it reboots.

Anyone experiencing this too?

Just got mine back. Bluetooth was acting up and idrive was crashing sometimes. Took it to BMW and they updated it. Different home screen and climate settings now. Had it back for less then a week, so far no issues

Mine was updated last week before we picked it up and worked flawlessly while only paired to my android phone. Upon my wife adding her iphone it's now crashing like the op describes 😭

iDrive version 8? there’s a thread or two reporting issues with CarPlay connection. the crashes could be related. less reports of CarPlay issues with iDrive 8.5

Similar behavior last week that got progressively worse. Then on Friday (IIRC), 3 days ago, there were a couple of reboots and then the problem stopped. Right now I am working under the assumption that there was a software update.

An automatic software update? Wouldn’t you be notified if that were the case?

He definitely did not receive an OTA update for iDrive as there needs to be user involvement in the install process. Apps and Services updates are automatic but those happen in the background and do not involve an iDrive restart.

Any updates here? Just picked up new X5 x40i and having similar issues.

I also had an issue two days ago which the backup cam would not initiate. Did a reset (park hold power for 70 seconds) and that appears to have resolve the issue, but iDrive has been very glitchy. Not too happy.

Mine is still very buggy, waiting on an OTA update. I have to say, I prefer drive 7, makes me want to to drive the M3 more

What version iDrive are you on? I am bringing my car into the dealer tomorrow morning to see if they will upgrade me from 07/2023.40

I recently switched from iDrive 8 to iDrive 8.5 in my 2024 X5 M60i and had a similar issue but fixed it after completing these few steps:

1. Once the new system software is installed (5.5 hours at the local dealer!), do a hard reset of the iDrive system. Clear out all the previous phone connections and start from the beginning to pair your phone.

2. When connecting the Apple iPhone 14 Pro to iDrive 8.5, you have to install CarPlay separately by following this sequence on the phone:

On your iPhone, select your GENERAL settings icon and find CarPlay 6 slots down from the top under Picture in Picture.

It is only then that the phone searches for the CarPlay connection to iDrive 8.5. On your phone, it will say MY CAR and the last five digits of your VIN will pop up. Select the vehicle and make sure CarPlay is switched on.

I've had no issues since following this sequence, but it's only been five days since the upgrade.

Brought to dealer today. On the invoice it is noted "Found there to be a fault for HUH reset A76301. Followed test plans recommendation to reprogram vehicle and control units (6510_HU000000_90_210). Reprogrammed vehicle to the latest I level and found all vehicle components to be fully operational at this time.

Head unit says I am now on 07/2023.53.

Will report back if any issues persist.

Upgrading to iOS 17 helped a lot for me. I don't think I've had a connection issue since then.

I've experienced a similar issue which began the day I took delivery last week. I was driving and all of a sudden Idrive crashed and rebooted on its own. Then a few days later over the weekend when I started up my car I noticed that apple carplay didnt connect automatically and then all of a sudden it crashed again. I rebooted by pressing the volume button down and that fixed the issue but it happened a few days later. So far its happened a few times now. Anyways I took it in to the dealership today and apparently they did a hard software update and its up to date now according to the service guy. When I got back in my car I noticed the check engine light was on so I went back in and they took the car and removed the light sign. I'm hoping this is the last of this issue but I'll keep my eye on it and see what happens over the next few days

On a side note I've noticed that once in a while whenever I'm listening to music via wireless carplay the sound will cut out consecutively for a few seconds and then it will be fine. This has happened a few times over the last week I don't know if its worth taking to the dealership again now for this new issue or maybe it will get fixed on its own over time
