My X5MC was a Canada car. It was imported and then put for sale at the dealer i bought at it. I didn't buy from Canada and have to go thru the import process as that was already done. One thing I learned that might help is that the BMW dealers in the US cannot see the service history of cars serviced at BMW Canada dealers. I had to call a dealer in Canada where it was serviced (per the Car fax report)and have them read the service history out of their system to me. I wanted piece of mind that the break in service was done on time along with other regular maintenance interval things.

Not sure if any of that helps but that was my experience.

I’m now focusing on one car. Biggest drawback seems to be the tires—Pirelli summers. I’d really prefer all season due to winter concerns. What has people’s experience been driving an X5MC in winter conditions—i.e., periodic snow and somewhat frequent freezing temperatures? The major reason for trading in my current car (an E63S) is that it’s virtually undriveable in winter. I could always put different tires on my Mercedes, but I already have an M8 for performance and think an X5 would be more versatile—assuming better winter performance. Thanks, Mike

You do NOT want to drive on summer tires and the tires can be damaged if driving in freezing conditions. My Pirelli summer tires lose traction pretty easily under 50 degrees. Most people just buy a set of dedicated winter wheels and tires and swap out seasonally.

This is what I had before I bought a pickup truck as my daily. I was able to sell them after a season of use for about 3/4 of what they cost. There are also used sets in the marketplace area.

Just spoke to dealer with the Canadian car who claims no warranty transfer. Curious.

One of my best friends is a major US wholesaler sells about 600 cars a week, he won’t let me buy a Canadian car and always tells me DO NOT BUY A CANADIAN CAR! I don’t know all the exact reasons but as he sells 600+ cars a week I tend to listen to his advice….. very sharp guy with extended knowledge of all types of vehicles. He does buy and sell Canadian cars and I know they always sell below national average. Something to consider….

Sapphire black is a beautiful color and pictures do not do it justice. My previous 2017 X5 was sapphire black and I’ve never been fond of black cars but I loved it. Pops in the sunlight.

I agree if warranty is a concern look for lower mileage but be aware lower mileage doesn’t exactly mean better taken care of. Like Doug Demuro said in one of his latest podcast interviews, read the descriptions, look at every single detail carefully including all the records and buy the seller. If it’s a dealer a little more difficult to do but buy the extra warranty for piece of mind. I would say though it feels most X5M owners are responsible adults that take care of their SAV’s

That is an interesting take on buying cars from Canada. I have zero knowledge of this but I did end up buying an X5MC from an Aston Martin dealer in Minneapolis and the car was initially sold and serviced at BMW in Quebec. Car is in spectacular condition, super low mileage and clean service history.

It would be interesting to hear the why's behind your buddies take to avoid vehicles from Canada. I have never heard about this before.

Overtime the colder weather, ice & snow, can cause rust and extra wear on parts and dealers get those cars for cheaper than their American counterparts so usually you should get one for a good price if it was previously Canadian owned but of course dealers will just sell it and make as much as possible. If you purchased yours with low miles and relatively new then I don’t see you having any issues except when you go to sell it, if you choose to go the dealer route they might* offer you less for it than if it was originally from USA.
I do say if because every dealer is different has a different market and markets are ever changing, plus your condition, maintence records, and any extra goodies will def come into play. I just know whenever I was looking for a car id see one selling for a good deal and he’d just say no 👎 no good pass on it, its previously Canadian. I know he’s had a ton of them and even used to buy them from Canada and sell them here and no longer does that but still moves units galore every week…..

Makes sense now. I live in MN where it's like Canada 5 months out of the year with the cold and salty roads. Agreed that cars from warmer climates are more desirable and command a higher price.

Given the great advice from all of you, I’ve got to abandon my dream of an X5MC. Can’t get all season tires and unwilling to spend ah extra $3,000+ on extra winter tires and wheels—something I routinely did when I lived in Minnesota for 30 years. Thank you all for your help.

That's a shame, I bought an X5MC and swapped the summer tires for Continental DWS PLUS all season tires and they have been fantastic in the dry and the heavy Michigan snow this winter. You should consider this as a viable option.

Is the tire size the OEM size? Couldn’t see those available for my X5MC

+1 on this. I also have these Conti all seasons installed on my stock wheels and they are awesome. They were only available in 5% taller sidewall but they fit great and it's nice having a little more thickness to ride on.

They are not available in the exact OEM size. You can get them with a 5% taller sidewall and they fit well, no rubbing, no issues with rolling diameter, etc.

See that’s why I made a post on classifieds to trade my front oem 21 inch 809m wheels with almost new Michelin PS4’s for anyone’s oem rears with summers and I def be opposed to swapping out my black interior for silver stone interior I personally love it.

Imo, I would see it more as now isn’t the right time for it. I understand time isn’t a luxury for us all but for the cost of safety on the road, I’d rather wait a bit and be able to afford the winter set vs be a statistic in the winter.

there's always turnover in these. i picked a dedicated set up from the FS section here for under $1500.
